San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino fell in the opener of a three-game set by the score of 5-3 to the Lancaster JetHawks. The 66ers had the go-ahead run on base in the eighth inning but finished the night 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The 66ers got multi-hit games from Jahmai Jones and Luis Rengifo but also committed a season-worst four errors.
The JetHawks (22-20) Vince Fernandez' RBI double after an error had prolonged the inning for Inland Empire starter Nate Bertness (1-4). The 66ers (20-22) tied the game in the bottom of the first when Rengifo and Jones each singled and Rengifo scored on Jared Walsh's sac fly to the wall in left. The RBI made it 1-1 and moved Walsh into a tie for the league-lead with 32 RBI. The JetHawks recaptured the lead in the second when Fernandez tripled home a run for his second extra-base hit of the night and then scored on Tyler Nevin's sac fly. Lancaster tacked on another pair of runs in the seventh highlighted by Alan Trejo's two-out RBI single for a 5-1 lead. In the eighth the Sixers got RBI walks from Jonah Todd and Julian Leon but Reid Humphries came in and got a strikeout to keep a 5-3 lead. Humphries pitched a clean ninth for his tenth save of the year. Matt Dennis (3-6) earned the win Lancaster allowing one run in five innings on five hits with three walks and two Ks.
