Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino were defeated by the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 4-1 earning Rancho Cucamonga a rare five-game sweep. The Sixers have now lost a season-worst seven consecutive games while the Quakes (46-37, 11-2) have won eight in a row.
The Quakes struck early in the contest against Inland Empire starter Jeremy Beasley (3-2) when Gavin Lux drilled a solo homer to center to lead off the bottom of the first. The 66ers were held down by Dodgers' righty Walker Buehler until the fourth inning. Buehler, who pitched for the Quakes in 2017 was making an injury rehab appearance (ribs) and allowed one hit and a walk with five Ks through three innings but came back out for the fourth and Brandon Marsh smoked a triple to center to chase Buehler. Julian Leon knocked Marsh home with a sac fly against southpaw reliever Austin Hamilton (1-0) making his Cal League debut. Hamilton tossed three perfect frames to earn the win. The Quakes took a lead in the fifth when Nick Yarnall doubled and Lux followed with a two-bagger one out later to take a 2-1 lead. Yarnall added a two-run single in the sixth for a 4-1 advantage. Inland Empire (37-46, 4-8) mustered just three hits in the game, two were for extra-bases as Leon had a double to go along with Marsh's fifth triple of the year. Jahmai Jones had an infield hit. Jo Adell's hit streak ended at 13 games. Michael Boyle earned his third save for the Quakes with a scoreless ninth. Inland Empire has not scored more than four runs in any of the games during its seven-game skid.
The 66ers open a home series versus Stockton on Wednesday, July 4th at 7:05. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
