After a tough road trip, the Jupiter Hammerheads returned to Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium for a fresh series against the Daytona Tortugas. However, the Hammerheads dropped the first game of the six-game set 6-3 on Tuesday.

Jupiter scored first, courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Yiddi Cappe. It was the 10th RBI for the Marlins’ No. 6 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

The Hammerheads’ starting pitcher Juan Reynoso had retired nine straight batters before a tough fourth inning. In the frame, the Tortugas scored five runs and brought nine batters to the plate. Reynoso allowed two earned runs and struck out four in three innings of work.

Down 5-1, the Hammerheads would close the gap in the seventh inning. Kahlil Watson would drive in Javier Sanoja with his first triple of the season. The 2021 first-round draft pick would finish just a home run shy of the cycle with a 3-5 showing on the night. The 19-year-old would quickly score when Marlins’ All-Star Garrett Cooper drove him in with a single. Cooper, making a rehab appearance after suffering a concussion, finished 1-3 on the evening.

Daytona would add one more run in the ninth inning to increase their lead 6-3.

Following Reynoso, Jupiter utilized Natanael Polanco out of the bullpen. The righty pitched three innings and allowed just one hit in his Hammerheads debut. Manuel Medina also made his first appearance in a Jupiter uniform and pitched two shutout innings. The Venezuelan native struck out three batters as well. To close the game, Jupiter turned to Marlins’ 9th round draftee Evan Taylor. The former Arkansas Razorback struck out two batters but allowed one run on Tuesday.

The Hammerheads and Tortugas will play a doubleheader on Wednesday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. The 7-inning twin bill is to accommodate a lost game between the two clubs earlier in the year. Gates will open at 4:30 PM, with the first game getting underway at 5:00 PM. Tickets are still available here
