Hammerheads Fall 7-3 to Tarpons in Regular Season Home Finale

JUPITER, FL – The Jupiter Hammerheads (23-34; 60-63) fell to the Tampa Tarpons (39-18; 74-49) by a final score of 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. In five games, Jupiter was swept by Tampa, marking the first time Jupiter was swept in a series since July 17-19 at Daytona in three games.

After a brief rain delay, the Tarpons got right to work on offense in the top of the first inning. After a walk and a pickoff throwing error, Yostin Peña hit an RBI single to center field off the Hammerheads’ starting pitcher Hamlet Garcia (L, 0-2) which put the Tarpons ahead 1-0.

Tampa extended their lead in the top of the second inning. After two singles and a walk, the Tarpons loaded the bases with no outs. Blake Schaaf hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate their second run to give Jupiter a 2-0 deficit.

Jupiter loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second inning but did not score. Both teams failed to score a run in the third inning. Garcia finished his first Single-A start with 2 1/3 innings pitched and allowed two runs, one earned run, three hits, four walks, and struck out two batters.

However, on the first pitch of the top of the fourth inning against Jupiter relief pitcher Davidxon Lara, Tyce Armstrong hit a solo home run to left field, his third home run of the series, to extend the Tarpons’ lead to 3-0. Peña hit the second home run of the game for the Tarpons in the top of the fifth inning, a solo home run to left-center field, give Tampa a 4-0 lead.

The Hammerheads finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Eric Guevara led off with a walk. After advancing to second base on a groundout, Luis Arana drove in Guevara on an RBI single and advanced to second base on the throw. Arana later stole third base and scored on a throwing error to cut the deficit in half. Wessley Roberson, who made his professional debut, drew a walk. Echedry Vargas smacked an RBI double to left-center field to get Jupiter within one run at a 4-3 deficit after five innings.

However, Tampa immediately got the runs back in the top of the sixth inning against Jonas Uzcategui. After a leadoff walk, Armstrong hit an RBI double to increase the Tampa lead to two runs. The next batter, Anthony Potestio, reached on an error by Jacob Lombard which allowed Armstrong to score. With only one hit, Uzcategui was taken out of the game and Luis De La Cruz came in to finish the inning. Postestio later came in to score on a strikeout after Carlos Sanchez committed a throwing error trying to pick another runner off. In total, nine batters came to the plate and three runs scored while Tampa left the bases loaded to take a 7-3 lead.

Justin West (SV, 2) entered the game in the top of the fifth inning for Tampa and tossed 4 1/3 shutout innings where he allowed just one hit and struck out nine hitters. Jupiter did not have an answer against him and ultimately fell by the 7-3 final score in the regular season home finale on Sunday.

The Hammerheads will play in their final regular season series on the road against the St. Lucie Mets beginning on Tuesday, September 1 with first pitch scheduled for 6:10 p.m. The Hammerheads will meet the Daytona Tortugas in the first round of the Florida State League playoffs.
