Hammerheads Fall Late to Mets in 7-2 Loss Thursday Night

JUPITER, FL – The Jupiter Hammerheads (18-25; 55-54) allowed seven unanswered runs to the St. Lucie Mets (16-27; 49-60) as Jupiter fell by a final score of 7-2 on Thursday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

In the bottom of the first inning, Echedry Vargas hit his ninth home run in his last 14 games, a solo home run to left field off St. Lucie starting pitcher Ethan Lanthier, to give Jupiter a 1-0 lead. For Vargas, it was his team-leading 19th home run of the season.

Jupiter starting pitcher Jake Clemente and Lanthier were engaged in an early pitchers’ duel early in the ballgame. Through the first three innings, both pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and two hits. Lanthier came out of the game after 3 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts.

Clemente finished his start with five innings pitched and allowed no runs, one hit, two walks, and struck out five Mets hitters. For Clemente, he completed five innings on the mound for the first time since June 9 at Daytona.

Jupiter extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Eric Guevara, the Marlins’ seventh-round draft pick who made his professional debut for the Hammerheads, led off with an infield single for his first hit. Two batters later, Jake McCutcheon hit a single to put two runners on base. Jacob Lombard followed McCutcheon with a sacrifice fly to center field as the Hammerheads took a 2-0 lead after five innings.

In the top of the seventh inning, St. Lucie tied the game against Gerinton Mendez (L, 1-3; BS, 1). After the first two hitters reached base, Bohan Adderley hit an RBI double down the left field line and Vladi Gomez drove in a run with an RBI groundout which tied the game 2-2.

St. Lucie took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning when Elian Peña and John Smith III hit back-to-back doubles with Smith III getting the game-winning RBI. The Mets extended their lead with four more runs in the top of the ninth inning thanks to a two-RBI single from Kooper Schulte and a two-run home run from Peña to give St. Lucie a 7-2 lead. The deficit was too much to overcome as the Hammerheads were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth inning by Miguel Mejias (Sv, 5) as Jupiter lost 7-2 on Thursday night.
