LANSING, Mich. - Lansing Lugnuts shortstop/third baseman Kevin Smith has been named the Midwest League's Player of the Week for the week of April 23-29.
Smith, 21, batted .433 with a .471 on-base percentage and a .933 slugging percentage in eight games, going 13-for-30 with four runs scored, seven doubles, one triple, two home runs, 13 RBIs, three walks and one stolen base.
Drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fourth round in 2017 from the University of Maryland, Smith leads the Midwest League in runs batted in (25), doubles (10), extra-base hits (14) and total bases (50), while ranking third in both slugging percentage (.568) and base hits (29). He is the first Lugnut to be honored by the league with a weekly award this season.
Smith and the Eastern Division-leading Lansing Lugnuts (16-8) return to action tomorrow, a Dollar Deal Day featuring $1 popcorn, $1 hot dogs, $1 ice cream sandwiches, $1 fountain drinks and $1 Miller High Life. Gates open at 6 p.m. with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. against the Kane County Cougars (10-11).
