Bears get former co-National Player of the Year, Roemer

Diamondbacks assigned first-rounder to Yakima
July 25, 2007

(Yakima) - Wes Roemer - Collegiate Baseball's 2006 Co-National Player of the Year at Cal State-Fullerton - has been assigned to the Yakima Bears.

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected the right-handed pitcher as a First Round Supplemental pick in this season's draft with their second pick and 50th overall. In three seasons with the Titans, Roemer went 30-11 with 366 strikeouts and just 44 walks. He is the all-time strikeout leader for Fullerton, one of the most prestigious college baseball programs in the country with 12 national championships.

A native of Glendora, CA, Roemer went 11-7 as a junior in 2007 with a Big West Conference best 150 strikeouts. He also pitched seven complete games in 19 starts this season as Fullerton's ace. He helped lead the Titans to the College World Series, and pitched well in a 3-2 losing effort to the eventual national champion Oregon State Beavers in his final collegiate start.

As a sophomore in 2006, Roemer was named Co-National Player of the Year along with Kellen Kulbacki (now playing with the Eugene Emeralds in the Northwest League). He began the season by going 65.2 innings without walking a batter, finishing the season with 13 wins and a 2.38 ERA. His 145 strikeouts, 155 innings pitched, and .220 opponents' batting average led the Big West Conference in 2006, also earning him the conference's Pitcher of the Year award.

Along with catcher Ed Easley, Roemer is the second 2007 First Round Draft Pick to join the Yakima Bears roster. Barry Enright, a second-round pick, also joined the team last week. Roemer is not expected to be activated for at least two weeks.
