Cal-Car derby participants set

Earley, Shoemaker to represent All-Star hosts

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Eight of the best home run hitters in Minor League Baseball will take part in the 2012 Home Run Derby, presented by United Airlines, in advance of the California-Carolina League All-Star Game, presented by BB&T. The Home Run Derby will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday inside BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem.

A pair of outfielders from the hosts of the Midsummer Classic highlights the Carolina League's derby roster. Winston-Salem's Brady Shoemaker is third in the league with 11 home runs. He will represent the Dash along with Michael Earley, who has gone yard nine times this season.

Carolina designated hitter Jeremie Tice, who is tied for the Carolina League lead with 12 home runs, will also swing for the fences, along with Lynchburg first baseman Chris Garcia.

Four different California League squads will be represented in the Home Run Derby. C.J. Retherford, a former Winston-Salem infielder with 15 home runs for Rancho Cucamonga, and Miles Head, a Triple Crown candidate with Stockton, headline the California League quartet. Former first-round picks George Springer (Lancaster) and Chris Owings (Visalia) round out the field.

All eight participants will receive 10 outs to work with in the first round. The swingers with the top two totals during round one will square off in the finals, which will also consist of 10 outs

The Home Run Derby, presented by United Airlines, is the final event prior to the California-Carolina League All-Star Game, which is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
