D-backs pick up McWilliams from Phillies

Arizona trades veteran Hellickson to get 20-year-old right-hander
November 14, 2015

Arizona swapped a big league right-hander for a promising Minor League one on Saturday.

The D-backs sent six-year veteran Jeremy Hellickson to Philadelphia to land 20-year-old Sam McWilliams.

"Sam follows along the lines of what we've been doing for the last year, acquiring young power arms," D-backs general manager Dave Stewart told MLB.com. "He's a high school Draft pick that put up good numbers in the Gulf Coast League. He'll be a great addition to our organization."

McWilliams was picked out in the eighth round of the 2014 Draft out of Beech High School in Hendersonville, Tennessee. He throws a fastball that can get up to 95 mph and has sinking action, complementing it with a decent changeup and a developing curveball. He was the Phillies' 27th-ranked prospect.

McWilliams was 2-3 with a 5.40 ERA over 25 innings in the Rookie-level GCL in his debut seson. Repeating the league this year, he went 0-2 with a 3.27 ERA and .232 opponents' average in seven starts.

Hellickson came up in the Tampa Bay system, where he spent his first five big league seasons. Last year, he was 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA in 27 starts for Arizona.
