GreenJackets finish off Braves

Mooney singles in go-ahead run in 6-4 triumph
September 9, 2006
Michael Mooney singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning Friday as the Augusta GreenJackets beat the Rome Braves, 6-4, to sweep their South Atlantic League Division Series.

Eugenio Velez led off the seventh with a double off reliever Jake Stevens (0-1). Mooney, hitless in his first seven at-bats in the series, came through with a single up the middle to snap a 4-4 tie.

Pedro Sandoval, who went 4-for-5 and scored twice, gave the GreenJackets some insurance by singling in Mooney.

Augusta advanced to the SAL Championship Series against Lakewood, which begins Monday. The GreenJackets won the title in 1995 and 1999.

Robert Grace (1-0) picked up the win with five innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits and striking out two. Osiris Matos got the final five outs for his second postseason save.

Augusta starter Dave McKae surrendered four runs -- one earned -- on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in two innings.

Jordan Schafer drove in two runs for the Braves, who built an early 4-2 lead. The GreenJackets tied it in the fourth, when Anthony Contreras drew a bases-loaded walk and Antoan Richardson stroked an RBI single.

Stevens yielded two runs on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts in three innings. Rome starter Adam Stanley allowed four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and four walks over 3 1/3 frames.
