Naylor shines in Padres Futures Game
It's a small sample size, but Josh Naylor enjoys the environs in San Diego.
The Canadian slugger blasted a three-run homer and doubled Friday night to lead the Padres to a 5-1 triumph over the Rangers in the Padres Futures Game at Petco Park.
Naylor, the Padres' fourth-ranked prospect, put the home team in front for good when he took Rangers No. 8 prospect Brett Martin over the left-center field fence in the first inning. He added a double in the eighth before leaving for a pinch-runner.
"Just being here with this team was amazing," Naylor told MLB.com. "These guys are my brothers, and getting to play here was a great experience. You never know when your last day of baseball is going to be, so you have to take advantage of the opportunity."
Acquired from the Marlins in July in the deal that sent right-hander Andrew Cashner to Miami, Naylor also had two hits and drove in a run for the World team in the All-Star Futures Game in July at Petco Park.
Anderson Espinoza, MLB.com's No. 13 overall prospect, started for the Padres on Friday and struck out two in a perfect inning. He was followed by first-round pick Cal Quantrill, who yielded a run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts in two frames.
"I was a little nervous being out there on the mound," Espinoza told MLB.com through a translator. "But after that first pitch, everything after that was very relaxed. The plan of attack was just to go after guys with the fastball. For me, just being able to be here in Petco Park, getting that experience, it is all going to be helpful for me getting here in the future."
Ti'Quan Forbes had two of the Rangers' three hits and scored their lone run on a second-inning single by Yohel Pozo.
