Danville Braves, Averett Athletics team up to support God's Storehouse

DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University athletics and the Danville Braves minor league baseball organization teamed up to collect more than 200 pounds of canned food items for God's Storehouse of Danville last Saturday.
Fans were encouraged to bring four canned goods in exchange for free admission to Averett's women's and men's basketball games on Jan. 14. To help promote the good cause, the Averett Cougar mascot and Danville Braves mascot Blooper played two-on-two basketball games at halftime of both games.
"God's Storehouse gives many of Danville's residents hope when they need it most and is certainly one of the most important organizations in our community," Averett Director of Athletics Sam Ferguson said. "We're always happy to play a role in their great work. We're thankful for our partnership with the Danville Braves on this project. While Blooper was victorious in the mascot challenge, the real champions of this event were the Averett students and fans who were so generous through their donations. We look forward to this event and its impact for many years to come."
God's Storehouse is one of the many local organizations that Averett works with as a part of its community service efforts.
During their halftime contests, the Averett Cougar and Blooper tied 8-8, but Blooper took the final matchup 8-0 during halftime of the men's game.
"I expected a little more effort out of Blooper and the Cougar," joked David Cross, general manager of the Danville Braves. "But in all seriousness we were glad to see so many people come out and support God's Storehouse and Averett. We look forward to building on this event in the future."
