Martinez, Bradley ahead in All-Star voting

Fans focus on Singleton, Duvall, Hague, Baez after first two weeks
June 11, 2015

Omaha fans have wasted no time in attempting to make sure their favorite hometown players stay around when the Triple-A All-Star Game arrives next month.

Omaha outfielder Jose Martinez and Red Sox fan favorite Jackie Bradley Jr. are the two leading vote-getters after nearly two weeks of fan voting for the 2015 Triple-A All-Star Game. Martinez, a 26-year-old Royals prospect, is batting .370 in 39 games with the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers this season and leads all Pacific Coast League players in votes as of Tuesday -- the online ballot launched May 29.

Omaha, which will host this year's event on July 15 at Werner Park, could send a few more of its own to the game if voting holds up -- veteran Casey Kotchman currently owns a slim lead over Fresno's Matt Duffy for PCL designated hitter, and Whit Merrifield also has the edge so far over Round Rock's Rougned Odor for second base. Storm Chasers starter Aaron Brooks currently holds one of two pitching spots for the PCL, although he's well behind Mets prospect and Las Vegas lefty Steven Matz, who leads the PCL with 75 strikeouts and a 1.94 ERA.

The rest of the PCL leaders as of June 10 include some big and familiar names, including Jon Singleton, the Fresno first baseman who saw time in the Majors last year and made headlines this season with a record-setting 10-RBI night on May 13. The 23-year-old Astros prospect is batting .269, leads the PCL with 14 homers and ranks second with 52 RBIs through June 10.

Giants third baseman Adam Duvall, who also saw time in the Majors last year, owns a healthy lead over Omaha's Cheslor Cuthbert at third base, while Iowa's Javier Baez has a grip on shortstop. Baez, 22, is batting .314 with eight homers and 29 RBIs in 37 games but is currently sidelined for a month with a broken finger. Astros prospect Carlos Correa ranks second in voting at short, although he's now in the Majors, and Tacoma's Ketel Marte is third -- the 21-year-old Mariners prospect ranks third in the PCL with a .343 average and second in steals with 17.

Las Vegas' Johnny Monell has the edge so far over El Paso's Rocky Gale behind the plate, and a pair of Reno Aces, Peter O'Brien and Mike Freeman, own the other two PCL outfield spots behind Martinez.

The PCL's current bullpen outlook includes a pair of interesting names. Former Oklahoma City right-hander David Aardsma has the most votes, although he was released by the Dodgers on June 4 and signed with the Braves three days later. Atlanta then called him up to the Majors.

Pat Venditte, the switch-pitching sensation who was last an All-Star in the Minors in 2009, finally got the call and made his Major League debut on June 5 when Oakland selected his contract from Triple-A Nashville. He currently ranks second in PCL relief voting, ahead of Omaha's Buddy Baumann and Iowa's Blake Cooper.

In the Internatonal League, Bradley's name and star power have surely aided his cause, although a .325 average and a dozen RBIs in 39 games have also helped the Pawtucket center fielder. The 25-year-old was last voted a Minor League All-Star in 2012 with Class A Advanced Salem in the Carolina League.

Buffalo's Matt Hague ranks second in overall votes for the IL squad and owns a gigantic edge over Charlotte slugger Matt Davidson at third. Hague leads the IL in hitting with a .341 average and also tops the circuit with 38 RBIs. Davidson is tied for the league lead in homers with nine.

The rest of the IL's infield has players from a variety of clubs -- Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Kyle Roller has the edge so far over Columbus' Jesus Aguilar at first, and Pirates No. 7 prospect Alen Hanson has a slim lead over Durham's Alexi Casilla at second base. Chase d'Arnaud is one of two Lehigh Valley players leading in votes -- he's currently ahead at shortstop, topping Indians No. 1 prospect Francisco Lindor, and teammate Brian Bogusevic is one of three top vote-getters in the IL outfield.

Norfolk catcher Steve Clevenger owns a commanding lead behind the plate, and Rochester's Danny Ortiz owns the third outfield position. Chris Parmelee, who appeared in 87 games in the Majors last year with Minnesota, has a slim lead over Charlotte's Dan Black for IL designated hitter.

Among pitchers, Toledo's Buck Farmer and Rochester's Tommy Milone have the most votes for starters, while Indianapolis' Blake Wood and Durham's Ronald Belisario jumped ahead in the IL bullpen.

Fan balloting will count as one-third of the player's total votes, joining the media and Triple-A managers and front office members. Fans can vote for a pair of starting pitchers and relievers plus a designated hitter along with the standard positions, with voting ending just before midnight ET on June 26.

The game will be televisted live on MLB Network.
