McCann to rehab with Pelicans

April 27, 2009
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans announced Monday that Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann will join the team for a rehab assignment beginning Tuesday, April 27. McCann was placed on the Braves' disabled list on Saturday with an ongoing problem with his left eye.

McCann was drafted by the Braves in the second round of the 2002 MLB draft. The Athens, Georgia native spent the entirety of the 2004 campaign with the Pelicans, putting up a .278 average, 16 home runs and 66 runs batted in over 111 games. He broke into the Major Leagues a year later, playing in 59 games with the Braves and batting .278 with five home runs and 23 RBIs.

One of the premier backstops in Major League Baseball, McCann is the proud owner of two Silver Slugger awards, just the tenth catcher in MLB history to claim that distinction, having earned his second such award last year. Since the start of the 2006 season, a breakout year in which McCann hit .333 with 24 homers and 93 RBIs, McCann leads all catchers in Major League Baseball with 65 homers, 272 runs batted in and 114 doubles. In 2008, McCann set career highs in games (145), runs (68), hits (153), doubles (42), walks (57) and also hit his first career triple.

Continued blurry vision and dryness in McCann's left eye forced the 25-year-old to the disabled list on Saturday. McCann underwent Lasik surgery a year and a half ago. McCann started the 2009 season slowly, hitting .195 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 13 games.

McCann will join the team as the Pelicans continue their three-game set with the Lynchburg Hillcats tomorrow night at 7:05. Tickets are available for the remaining five games on the Pelicans' six-game homestand by calling the Pelicans box office at (843) 918-6000, visiting the box office at BB&T Coastal Field or by checking out the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
