Red Sox duo Pena, Bautista suspended

Red Sox sixth-round pick Mickey Pena and Dominican right-hander Gerson Bautista received 50-game suspensions Wednesday for violations of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Pena, a South Atlantic League All-Star with Class A Greenville in 2012, received a 50-game suspension without pay following a second positive test for a drug of abuse. The suspension is effective immediately.

The lefty from San Jacinto College North was 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA in three starts for Class A Advanced Salem this season. He had seven strikeouts and three walks over 13 innings, with his most recent start coming a day before the suspension was issued.

The 22-year-old from Mission, Texas, whose real name is Miguel, went 8-8 with a 3.01 ERA in 22 starts between two levels last season. The 2011 Draft pick appeared in five games with Class A Short-Season Lowell in 2011.

Bautista, currently with Boston's Dominican Summer League affiliate, received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Stanozolol. The suspension is effective at the start of the DSL season in June. The 17-year-old has yet to appear in a Minor League game. 

Stanozolol is a synthetic anabolic steroid derived from testosterone that is sometimes prescribed by veterinarians to encourage muscle growth, red blood cell production, bone density and to stimulate the appetite of weakened animals. It's also been linked to body builders and several former baseball players -- Rafael Palmeiro reportedly tested positive for the substance in 2005 and was suspended 10 games by Major League Baseball. 

Major League Baseball has suspended 15 players for violations of the Minor League drug program this year.
