Sidewinders Cruise to Big Win over Salt Lake

Whitesell Ties Overbay's RBI Mark

Tucson, AZ - Tucson let the bats fly Friday with a 15-8 win over the Pacific Northern Division Champion Salt Lake Bees. The Sidewinders scored nine of those runs in the first inning after going down 3-0 in the top of the frame.

Tucson's Phil Avlas highlighted the outburst by going 5-for-5 in the game with four RBI, four runs and his second homerun of the season in the first inning. Josh Whitesell got his team leading 26th home run with a solo shot in the second inning.

Whitesell, Jesus Merchan, and Frank Curreri all brought in three runs each for the Sidewinders. Whitesell's three-RBI night gave him 109 on the season, which ties him for first with Lyle Overbay for Tucson's all-time franchise single season RBI record.

Salt Lake was lead by Matt Brown and Freddy Sandoval with two hits, and a run each. Sandoval brought in two of the Bees eight runs.

The Sidewinders will play game two of a four game series against Salt Lake starting on Saturday at 7:00 P.m. LHP Evan MacLane (7-8, 5.17) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Anthony Ortega (4-0, 2.53) will start for the Bees. The game will air live on www.BaseballReno.com beginning at 6:50 p.m.
