Smith, Lake County no-hit Delmarva

Like his mother always says, Carlton Smith was "smokin'" on Sunday.

The Lake County starter combined with two relievers for the first no-hitter in franchise history with a 2-0 shutout of Delmarva at Classic Park.

"This is the first time in my career ever," Smith said. "It actually didn't hit me till the end of the game. I've never seen anybody do it."

Smith (5-5) struck out four and walked one over a season-high seven innings.

"I'm on Cloud 10 right now," he said. "My mom actually left me a pretty funny voicemail. Smokin' -- that's what she's been saying to me since high school. My brother...called me to congratulate me. My dad called me to congratulate me. Everybody's been there for me."

The 21-year-old right-hander retired the first seven batters, fanning the side in the first inning, before yielding a one-out walk to Victor Castillo in the third. He set down the next 14 consecutive batters before being taken out after the seventh due to pitch count. He had thrown 77 pitches.

"They asked me [in the bottom of the seventh] if I wanted to go back out there. I said, 'Yeah, I'll do it'," he said, adding that he couldn't tell if they were joking or not.

After posting a 6.42 ERA in the first two months of the season, Smith tossed six innings in a combined three-hit shutout June 1 against Lakewood. In his last start June 16, he allowed one run on four hits, while striking out four and walking one in five frames. He currently owns a 5.77 ERA.

"The last time I faced [Delmarva], I had a rough first inning," he said. "I went five innings that game, and [after the first], I didn't give up a hit until two outs in the fifth inning."

Captains reliever Austin Creps walked Billy Rowell but induced Brandon Snyder to ground into a double play and retired David Cash in the eighth. Luis Perdomo walked one in the ninth, but recorded the final three outs for his third save.

Niuman Romero tripled and scored on Jason Denham's single in the second and Nicholas Weglarz added an RBI base hit in the sixth for Lake County (3-1).

Delmarva starter Jeffrey Moore (4-3) gave up two runs on five hits, fanning five and walking four in 5 2/3 innings.

The Shorebirds (1-3) have been blanked four times this season, including once before by Lake County on May 24 in a 4-0 contest.
