Spinners Win Caps Celebration of LeLacheur's Life

Offense errupts for 16 hits as Younginer shuts down Spikes, 5-2
August 10, 2010
LOWELL, MA - The Lowell Spinners held a moment of silence prior to the game in honor of the life of late State Representative Ed LeLacheur and then the bats came alive as the Spinners offense cranked out 16 hits and Madison Younginer hurled six shutout innings as Lowell blew past the State College Spikes Tuesday night at LeLacheur Park, 5-2.

Lowell (14-37) struck first in the second inning on a titanic home run by Brandon Jacobs that cleared the trees behind the wall in left field. David Renfroe followed one batter later with a solo home run of his own to give the Spinners a 2-0 lead.

The team suffered a scare at the conclusion of the top of the fifth inning as center fielder Felix Sanchez and right fielder Bryce Brentz each converged on a two-out shallow fly to right. Brentz held on for the catch but the two collided violently and each remained down for moments as the coaching and training staff of the Spinners converged on the outfield. Both would remain in the game after walking off on their own power.

The Spinners would get on the board next in the sixth inning when Josue Peley delivered Brentz with an RBI double to expand the lead to 3-0.

State College (25-27) got on the board in the top of the seventh after Younginer was removed from the game, touching Chez Angeloni for a run to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Spinners would respond however, scoring single runs in the seventh and eighth innings on RBI singles by Jose Iglesias (7th) and Peley (8th) to take the lead back to 5-1.

State College would score a run in the ninth, but Michael Hacker struck out Pat Irvine to end the game.

Younginer (3-5, 5.36) was fantastic on one-day extra rest after his scheduled start Monday was rained out. He allowed just three hits over six scoreless innings, striking out one while not walking a batter. Angeloni was touched for a run on two hits in one inning pitched, while Hacker picked up his first save of the season allowing one run on two hits in two innings, striking out four.

Every member of the Spinners offense picked up at least one hit, led by Iglesias's three hit night. Brentz, Renfroe, Peley, Sanchez and Jose Garcia each had two-hit nights, while Nick Robinson, Miles Head and Jacobs had one hit a piece. Renfroe extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

The Spinners go for two-in-a-row Wednesday night for Lou Merloni Bobble Head. Tyler Wilson gets the start for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
