MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (37-35) were defeated in a third consecutive game, losing to the Birmingham Barons (34-36), 8-2, Friday on 90's Night at Riverwalk Stadium. Jake Cronenworth served as a bright spot, extending his hitting streak to six games with his 12th multi-hit showing of the season.
The Barons battered Biscuits' starting pitcher Dalton Moats (0-2). The 23-year old southpaw allowed three hits to begin the game, including an RBI-single by Birmingham catcher Zack Collins. Following a mound visit, Moats would retire the next three batters; however, Trey Michalczewski advanced the lead to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly.
Montgomery cut the deficit in half in the second inning, thanks to left fielder Dalton Kelly. Kelly continued his success at the expense of Birmingham, hitting his fourth home run of the season and third against the Barons.
Despite the score, Zach Lee, who entered from the bullpen in the second, ran into trouble in the third frame. The right-hander issued a one-out walk to Michalczewski before surrendering a home run to Danny Mendick.
With a 4-1 advantage, Barons' starting pitcher Alec Hansen posted a scoreless frame. Yet, the Chicago White Sox pitching prospect allowed an RBI-single to Jake Cronenworth as the Biscuits narrowed Birmingham's edge.
Unfortunately, Montgomery's two runs would be all that was plated. The Barons, with the Butter and Blue scuffling, continued to attack. Birmingham scored four unanswered runs in the final five innings, putting the game out of reach.
The Biscuits continue a six-game homestand against the Birmingham Barons Saturday at 6:05 p.m. on Family Faith Night, featuring a Faith Radio Pre-Game Concert and MAX Fireworks. Montgomery will hand the ball to knuckleballer J.D. Martin (4-8) while the Barons are scheduled to start Dane Dunning (5-2).
The remainder of the series includes the 25th Anniversary of The Sandlot, which will be celebrated with a Youth Jersey Giveaway on Sunday, June 24, Golden Biscuits Monday on June 25 and Southern Fried Southern League on Tuesday, June 26.
