KODAK, Tenn. - The Biscuits' (37-32) offense exploded, dismantling the Tennessee Smokies (35-34), 8-4, on Saturday night at Smokies Stadium. Brett Sullivan and Nate Lowe both hit three-run home runs and Biscuits' starting pitcher Zach Lee (8-1) threw seven scoreless innings, propelling Montgomery past its North Division rival.
Zach Lee, entering with four victories in his last five Double-A starts, frustrated the Smokies. The Southern League All-Star retired the first eight batters, recording four strikeouts inside three innings.
Lee would strand a two-out single by Will Remillard in the third and prevent Tennessee from scoring after back-to-back base hits in the sixth.
While the former first-round draft pick peppered the Smokies, Montgomery's bats were red-hot. Brett Sullivan helped the Biscuits strike first against Tennessee starter Thomas Hatch (5-4), hitting a three-run home run in the first frame. Thomas Milone joined the act with a two-run double in the fourth, putting Montgomery ahead 5-0.
As Tennessee stayed scoreless, Nate Lowe added to the Biscuits' lead by hitting his third home run in two days and driving home three runs on one swing in the seventh.
Dalton Moats replaced Lee in the eighth. Moats hurled a perfect inning, keeping Montgomery ahead 8-0 going into the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Smokies were down to their last out as Trent Giambrone extended the game with his eighth home run of the season. Daniel Spingola followed the solo home run with a double before Zack Short walked.
After Biscuits' pitching coach R.C. Lichtenstein paid Moats a visit, Eddy Martinez blasted a home run over the left-center field wall, cutting the once eight-run lead in half and chasing the Biscuits' southpaw from the game.
Jordan Harrison was called upon for the last out, which he recorded by inducing a line out of Jesse Hodges.
The Biscuits conclude a five-game road trip against the Tennessee Smokies to close out the first half of the season on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Biscuits will offer a bullpen day while Matt Swarmer (0-0) will take Tennessee into the Southern League All-Star break.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium to open the second half of the season with a six-game series against the Birmingham Barons on Thursday, June 21, when it will be Tank Top and Flip Flop Night, featuring a Tank Top Giveaway. The homestand will also feature a special VIP meet and greet with Flavor Flav and MAX Fireworks for 90's Night on Friday, June 22, as well as Family Faith Night with a Faith Radio Pre-Game Concert and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, June 23. The 25th Anniversary of The Sandlot will be celebrated with a Youth Jersey Giveaway on Sunday, June 24.
