MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (34-30) defeated the Chattanooga Lookouts (34-30), 4-2, on Agriculture Night at Riverwalk Stadium. Nate Lowe powered Montgomery's offense, plating three runs on a two-hit night which featured his first Double-A home run.
Biscuits' starting pitcher Zach Lee (7-1) had Chattanooga guessing early. The right-hander posted a pair of scoreless frames, keeping the Lookouts off the board through two innings.
Montgomery placed a runner on the base paths in the second. Brett Sullivan singled off Chattanooga starter Sean Poppen (0-3) for the Biscuits' first hit. A Nathan Lukes' single advanced Sullivan to third, allowing for the latter to score on a Mike Brosseau sacrifice fly.
Poppen's struggles would continue in the fourth. Tampa Bay Rays' number 11 prospect Nick Solak singled to begin the frame. Nate Lowe, who entered with two home runs in his career off Poppen, slugged his first Double-A home run. The two-run home run surged Montgomery ahead 3-0.
While the offense supplied run support, Lee persisted to keep Chattanooga looking for an answer. The Lookouts could not string together back-to-back hits, leading to the 26-year old throwing four straight scoreless innings.
However, James Ramsey spoiled Lee's gem, hitting his third home run of the season in the fifth. Lee recovered by retiring the next two batters and stranding a two-out single, keeping the score 3-1.
Biscuits' reliever Curtis Taylor took over for Lee in the top of the sixth. The Canadian stranded a runner in the sixth and seventh but was unable to squander a one-out single from Edgar Corcino. Chattanooga third baseman Chris Paul doubled off Taylor, placing runners on second and third for Andy Wilkins.
Montgomery manager Brady Williams inserted Jordan Harrison for Taylor. The left-handed reliever allowed Wilkins to double, scoring Corcino. As Paul rounded third base and started for home, center fielder Thomas Milone relayed to shortstop Jake Cronenworth, who threw a bullet to catcher David Rodríguez, tagging the runner.
With two outs, Biscuits' closer Cody Hall replaced Harrison and induced a groundout of Brian Navarreto to end the eighth.
Montgomery scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Lowe recorded his third RBI, putting the Biscuits up 4-2 on a sacrifice fly.
Hall returned to the mound in the ninth, completing his fifth save by retiring the Lookouts in order. With the completed save, Montgomery pulls within 1.5 games of the first place Jackson Generals.
The Biscuits conclude the five-game homestand against the Chattanooga Lookouts Tuesday at 12:05 p.m. on Summer Splash Day at Riverwalk Stadium. Montgomery will have a bullpen day while the Lookouts have yet to announce a starter.
