MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Fueled by 7.2 shutout innings by Brock Burke (3-1), the Biscuits (63-52) edged the Birmingham Barons (55-59), 1-0, on Military Wednesday at Riverwalk Stadium. An RBI-single off the bat of Nick Solak in the sixth inning supplied all the run support Burke would need in the homestand opener.
Burke and Birmingham starting pitcher Tanner Banks (2-4) frustrated hitters throughout the night. The two southpaws spun scoreless frames early and surrendered a total of three hits through five innings.
In the sixth, Montgomery broke the scoreless stalemate and squeaked home a run. Tampa Bay Rays number eight prospect Lucius Fox ran out a one-out single and sped to second base on a groundout by Mike Brosseau. With Fox in scoring position, the table was set for Nick Solak. Solak slapped a single into center field, plating the Biscuits' shortstop without a throw.
In the meantime, Burke persisted to stymie the Barons. Despite Birmingham's Danny Mendick reaching base via a one-out single in the eighth, Montgomery's starter kept the opposition's offense silent by inducing a fly out of Matt Rose prior to Yoel Espinal recording the third out.
Espinal sealed the Biscuits' victory in the ninth, striking out Alex Call with runners on the corners and two outs.
Montgomery continues a five-game homestand against Birmingham on Thursday during 'Rally in the Alley' Bar Crawl, featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway, at 6:35 p.m. Sam McWilliams (4-6) will take the ball for the Biscuits while the Barons are scheduled to start Matt Tomshaw (4-6)
The series also includes Local Legends Night with MAX Fireworks on Friday, August 10, and Wrestling Night with an appearance by WWE Hall-of-Famer Jeff Jarrett and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, August 11. The set concludes with Bark in the Park and Kids Day, featuring a Kids Baseball Giveaway, on Sunday, August 12.
