KODAK, Tenn. - The Biscuits (35-32) lost a second straight game to the Tennessee Smokies (35-32), 5-4, on Thursday night at Smokies Stadium. With the loss, Montgomery is now two games back of the first place Jackson Generals with three games left in the first half of the season.
Tennessee starter Michael Rucker kept Montgomery off-balance throughout the night. The right-hander set the Biscuits down with ease, retiring the first thirteen of fourteen batters faced.
The Smokies had success off Biscuits' starting pitcher Génesis Cabrera, starting in the third. Trey Martin put Tennessee on the board with a solo home run, his sixth home run of the season.
An Eddy Martinez lead-off walk started a fire for the Smokies' offense in the fifth. Jason Vosler recorded his team-leading 41st RBI, doubling home Martinez with two outs. Yasiel Balaguert doubled the margin, bringing home Vosler on an RBI-single.
Although Montgomery's Nathan Lukes charged into a pitch for his second home run of the season in the fifth, the single score was all that could be mustered until the top of the ninth. Michael Rucker's six-inning quality start was spoiled by a pair of Biscuits' runs. Jake Stinnett surrendered a game-tying two-run home run to Peter Maris, knotting the game at 3-3.
Montgomery went on to continue hitting Tennessee's bullpen in extra innings. Nick Solak plated his Southern League-leading 43rd RBI, scoring Dalton Kelly, who began the frame at second base, on an RBI-double off Jordan Minch (1-1).
Entering the game in the ninth, Cody Hall (0-1) retired the first five batters he faced. However, a two-run walk-off home run from Ian Rice stunned the Biscuits and sent Smokies Stadium into a hysteria as Tennessee won 5-4.
The Biscuits continue a five-game road trip against the Tennessee Smokies to close out the first half of the season on Friday at 6:00 p.m. CST. Southern League Pitcher of the Week Sam McWilliams (2-2) eyes his third consecutive victorious start for Montgomery. The Smokies will start Duncan Robinson (3-1).
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium to open the second half of the season with a six-game series against the Birmingham Barons on Thursday, June 21, when it will be Tank Top and Flip Flop Night, featuring a Tank Top Giveaway. The homestand will also feature a special VIP meet and greet with Flavor Flav and MAX Fireworks for 90's Night on Friday, June 22, as well as Family Faith Night with a Faith Radio Pre-Game Concert and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, June 23.
