Cardinals Fall to Hammerheads 5-3 on Tuesday Night

JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (19-17; 52-50) fell to the Jupiter Hammerheads (13-23; 50-52) by a final score of 5-3 on Tuesday night in the series opener at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. With this win, Jupiter takes a 10-9 lead in the regular season series.

In the bottom of the first inning, Sebastian Dos Santos blasted his fourth home run of the year to left field a solo blast to give Palm Beach a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, Jupiter was able to respond against Palm Beach starting pitcher Payton Graham (L, 0-3). Jacob Lombard led off with his first professional home run to get the Hammerheads on the board. Later in the inning, Jupiter loaded the bases with no outs and Cam Kozeal scored on an error committed by Dos Santos on a failed throw to second base. Victor Ortega followed that play with a sacrifice fly as Jupiter took a 3-1 lead.

Palm Beach responded in the bottom of the third inning. Alex Birge led off by reaching first base on the first error committed by Lombard. With two outs and Birge at second base on a wild pitch, Yairo Padilla hit an RBI double to center field to cut the Palm Beach deficit to 3-2 after three innings.

In the top of the fourth inning, Echedry Vargas hit a two-run home run to center field, his team-leading 15^th home run of the year, to put the Hammerheads in front by a 5-2 score.

Graham finished his start with four innings pitched and allowed five runs, six hits, two home runs, four walks, and struck out only one batter. Brian Garmon II made his professional debut out of the Palm Beach bullpen in the top of the fifth inning and struck out one batter in a scoreless frame. Palm Beach loaded the bases and brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning but could not score.

Dallis Moran also made his professional debut as he pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Liam Best was the next man out of the bullpen and tossed 2 1/3 shutout innings where he allowed just one hit.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Palm Beach was down to their last out with the bases empty. Dos Santos drew a walk and later scored when Padilla hit his second RBI double of the game to cut the deficit to two runs. Ryan Mitchell drew a walk to put the tying run on first base, but Samuel Carpio (SV, 5) struck out Miguel Hernandez to end the game as Palm Beach ultimately fell by the final score of 5-3 on Tuesday night.
