Early Runs Deliver 8-4 Wednesday Victory for Cardinals Over Mighty Mussels

JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (25-25; 58-58) took advantage of early mistakes and capitalized to defeat the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (25-24; 62-52) by a final score of 8-4 on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. With the win and Daytona’s loss at Tampa, the Cardinals are now seven games back for first place in the FSL East Division with 16 games to go in the regular season.

After a 41-minute delay to begin the night, Colby Turner hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the game against Palm Beach starting pitcher Jacob Haley to give the Mighty Mussels an early 1-0 lead.

Later, in the bottom of the second inning, the Cardinals’ offense provided a big response against Fort Myers starting pitcher Matt Barr (L, 0-1). With the bases loaded and one out, JP Cabrera cleared the bases on a two-RBI double and was aided by an error to allow the third run to score. Later with two outs and runners at first and third base, Alexander Frias hit a blooped, RBI single to left field to increase the Palm Beach lead to 4-1. In total, the Cardinals sent 10 men to the plate, scored four runs, and left the bases loaded.

Palm Beach got right back to work in the bottom of the third inning. Gabe Camacho drove in Matthew Miura on an RBI single to add to the lead. Two batters later with Camacho at third base, Cabrera provided a productive RBI groundout for his third RBI of the night. With Heriberto Caraballo at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Trevor Haskins came in to score on a dropped-third strike which capped the scoring and gave the Cardinals a 7-1 lead after three innings.

Haley finished his first professional start with three innings pitched and allowed just the one run with one strikeout in a no-decision. Hendrick Caña (W, 1-0) came in to pitch for the Cardinals in the top of the fourth inning as part of his Single-A debut. Caña held the Mighty Mussels through his first two innings. However, in the top of the sixth inning, Fort Myers gave him some trouble. Charlie Scholvin was hit by a pitch and Turner hit a single to put runners at second and third base after the throw into the infield. Vahn Lackey drove in Scholvin on an RBI groundout to third base to cut into the Cardinals’ lead to 7-2. Yadiel Batista came in to pitch for the final out and left the bases loaded to limit the damage.

Two innings later in the bottom of the seventh inning, Camacho led off with a ground-rule double and Haskins followed up with an RBI double to right field, his 23^rd double of the season, to increase the Palm Beach lead to 8-2 after seven innings.

Fort Myers answered back in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs and two runners on base, Aidan Teel hit a two-RBI triple, his first professional triple, to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 8-4.

After the eighth inning, the scoring stopped for both teams as the Cardinals secured the 8-4 victory on Wednesday night to take the first two games of the series.

On offense, Miura finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Camacho finished with a game-high three runs scored while Cabrera drove in a Single-A career-high three runs in the win.
