Selected by the Kansas City Royals in the first round (No. 2 overall) of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Colleyville (Texas) Heritage High School... signed with the Royals on July 12, 2019 for $7.9 million... was the second-highest Draft bonus since Gerrit Cole got $8 million from the Pirates in 2011... his father, Bobby Witt, spent parts of 16 seasons in the Major Leagues from 1986-2001 with the Rangers, Athletics, Rays, Indians and D-backs after he himself was a first-round pick in 1985, going No. 3 overall to Texas out of Oklahoma... the elder Witt won a World Series ring with Arizona in 2001 and was named the Rangers' Pitcher of the Year in 1990 and now works as an agent... Witt Jr. and his father are the highest-drafted father-son duo in history... Witt Jr. hit .500 with 37 extra-base hits in 38 games, including 15 homers, and slugged 1.095 in 2019 in high school... Witt Jr. had committed to Oklahoma as well but instead signed with Kansas City to begin his professional career... led Colleyville Heritage to the Texas Class 5A state high school championship in 2019... was named the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year in 2019, his senior year of high school... played for Team USA in Panama City during the 2018 COPABE Pan-American Championship, helping the U.S. team to a gold medal... was voted MVP of the Under Armour All-America Game at Wrigley Field in 2018... also competed at the Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park... won the High School Home Run Derby, held at Nationals Park, in 2018... was on an MLB.com list of the greatest shortstop prospects since 1987 and he was ranked No. 2 behind Alex Rodriguez and ahead of Chipper Jones... told MLB.com he admired Derek Jeter and Dustin Pedroia, so much so that he combined their uniform numbers, 2 and 15, to wear No. 17 himself in high school.

Made his Minor League debut on June 30, 2019 with the Arizona League Royals, going 3-for-6 against the Cubs... did not play in 2020 after the season was wiped out by the Covid-19 pandemic... made his Double-A debut with Northwest Arkansas in 2021, hitting .295 with 16 homers, 51 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 61 games... promoted to Triple-A Omaha on July 20, 2021 after playing for the American League squad at the 2021 All-Star Futures Game in Colorado.
