Swanson Dazzles in Debut but Rainiers Fall in Extras on Opening Night

Sacramento, California - Newly acquired Seattle Mariners prospect Erik Swanson impressed in his Tacoma Rainiers debut, but the Rainiers eventually were defeated by the Sacramento River Cats in 11 innings at Raley Field, 5-4, on Thursday night.
Swanson, making his first apperance in the Mariners system, dealt five shutout innings, giving up no runs on six hits, walking none and fanning eight. The other four Tacoma hurlers combined to allow five runs on seven hits, walk two, and strike out two.
Robinson Leyer (0-1) took his first loss for the Rainiers after surrendering a double and single to end the game in the final frame.
Designated hitter David Freitas led the way offensively for Tacoma, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs along with a walk. Second baseman Shed Long tied a career-best with three runs in the effort, including scoring the as the automatic runner to start the 11th inning.
University of Washington product Braden Bishop compiled a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-5 with a double and a walk. Kristopher Negrón also chipped in for Tacoma, going 1-for-4 with two RBIs, including driving in Long for the go-ahead run in the 11th. Sacramento's lineup was led by Henry Ramos, who went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
As a group, Tacoma scored their four runs in the contest off of 10 hits, three of which went for extra bases. The Rainiers also supplemented their attack by drawing seven free passes from Sacramento pitchers.
The Rainiers are back in action in the second game of the series on Friday, April 5 at 7:05 PM PDT.
