It took ten innings to decide the first of a three-game series Friday night between the Tulsa Drillers and the Corpus Christi Hooks. The Drillers put together only four hits, but it was just enough as they came away victorious in a 2-1 win.
The score remained scoreless until the top of the fifth. With one out in the inning, Angelo Mora crushed a double to right, his second of the game, to put a man in scoring position. Yusniel Díaz brought him home with an RBI single to put the Drillers on top 1-0.
Tyler Pill made his Drillers debut in a relief appearance back on May 21, and it did not go well for him. After giving up five runs the relief outing, Pill tossed a sensational five shutout innings while striking out four in his first start of the year for Tulsa.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the eighth. Ariel Hernández came out of the pen to pitch for the Drillers, and allowed back-to-back doubles that evened things up at 1-1.
After Dylan Baker pitched a scoreless ninth, the Drillers broke through for a run in the top of the tenth. Andrew Istler started the inning on second as a pinch runner, and Errol Robinson advanced him to third on a sacrifice fly after an 11-pitch at bat. Tyler Goeddel then brought the go-ahead run home with another sacrifice fly to put Tulsa on top 2-1.
Baker came back out for the bottom of the tenth, and got in a little trouble. After a leadoff walk, he got Randy César to pop-up for an out, then allowed another walk to load the bases. Brian Moran came out of the pen and finished the job. He got a groundout and a strikeout to earn his second save of the season and to seal the Drillers 2-1 win.
WHAT YOU MISSED
Corey Copping provided two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Drillers, striking out three Hooks.
In addition to Mora's two doubles and Diaz's RBI single, Connor Joe hit a double in the first inning. The four Driller hits were a season-low in a victory.
Keibert Ruiz's 12-game hitting streak came to an end. Ruiz, Luke Raley and Jacob Scavuzzo have all had 12-game hitting streaks which is the highest of the season for Tulsa.
The Dodgers shuffled the roster earlier on Friday. Justin De Fratus rejoins the Drillers after spending some time in Oklahoma City and Diaz was activated off the disabled list. Frank Duncan and Peter O'Brien were sent to extended spring training.
*The Drillers have won the opening game in each of the last four series that they have played.
