The Tulsa Drillers and San Antonio Missions met for the final time Sunday night at ONEOK Field. San Antonio is leaving the Texas League and will move to Triple-A next season.
Drillers starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin helped Tulsa win the finale, delivering five brilliant innings. The bullpen took over from there and the Drillers edged the Missions 3-1.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Jacob Scavuzzo crushed a line drive, opposite field home run into the bullpen to put the Drillers on top.
An inning later, they added onto their lead. With the bases loaded, Keibert Ruiz hit a fly ball to center that was deep enough to bring home Errol Robinson from third, giving the Drillers a 2-0 lead.
Tony Gonsolin exited the game after the fifth inning, and was masterful in his outing. The right-hander allowed only one hit and struck out six Missions.
It was up to the bullpen to preserve the lead the rest of the way, and they did just that. Andrew Scrubb pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh, and Shea Spitzbarth pitched a perfect eighth.
After Keibert Ruiz doubled in a valuable insurance run in the eighth, Spitzbarth came back out for the ninth to try to finish the Missions off. After getting two quick outs, Austin Allen homered to cut the Missions deficit to 3-1.
Spitzbarth then walked a batter, bringing the tying run to the plate. After working the count full, he got Peter Van Gansen to strike out, earning his third save of the season, and preserving the series win.
WHAT YOU MISSED
Scavuzzo's homer in the fourth inning was the 168th home run that the Drillers have hit this season, which is tied for the most all-time.
Robinson stole his 18th base of the season in the fifth inning. Only Drew Jackson (21) has more on the team.
Ruiz's eighth inning double extended his hitting streak to a team-high eight games.
The Drillers will end with an all-time record of 534-580 against the Missions. San Antonio was 27-27 all-time at ONEOK Field.
*Arkansas was defeated by Midland, and Northwest Arkansas split a doubleheader against Frisco earlier on Sunday. After the Drillers win, they will enter next week 2.5 games clear of the Travs, and 5.0 games ahead of the third-place Naturals.
