Corpus Christi's second-half dominance over the Tulsa Drillers continued Tuesday night with a 10-6 victory at ONEOK Field. The Hooks, who own the best record in the Texas League, have now won all four meetings between the two teams in the second half of the season.
With the loss, the Drillers saw their first-place lead over Arkansas trimmed to just 2½ games.
The Hooks built a big early lead by scoring in each of the first four innings. They pounded eight hits and took advantage of three Tulsa errors to build an 8-0 lead through the first four frames. One of the hits was a solo home run by Anibal Sierra.
Keibert Ruiz got the Drillers on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
Tulsa made things interesting with four more runs in the sixth that cut the Corpus Christi lead to 8-5. Cael Brockmeyer singled home the first run before Ruiz struck again with a three-run homer, his eleventh of the season. It also marked the third two-homer game of the year for the catcher.
The Hooks ended Tulsa's hopes of a comeback with two more runs in the eighth.
Gavin Lux closed out the scoring with his third home run for the Drillers in the bottom of the ninth.
Reliever Andre Scrubb pitched effectively in his debut with the Drillers. Scrubb followed starter Justin De Fratus to the mound and struck out three while allowing only two hits in 2.2 shutout innings.
Forrest Whitley, who is rated as the #1 pitching prospect in Minor League Baseball, started and worked the first two innings for the Hooks. The Houston Astros prospect did not allow a hit in two shutout innings with two strikeouts.
WHAT YOU MISSED
Both teams wore their Hispanic Heritage uniforms in the game as part of Minor League Baseball's "Copa de la Diversión," or "Fun Cup" series. The game was officially a matchup between Los Petroleros de Tulsa and the Corpus Christi Raspas. Raspas are frozen treats that are popular in south Texas.
Ruiz finished with two hits in five at-bats and picked up four runs batted in a game for the third time this season.
*Prior to the game, Tulsa activated pitcher Andrew Sopko from the disabled list and transferred outfielder Tyler Goeddel to the temporarily inactive list. Sopko worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning in his first appearance since July 23.
