CURVE, Pa. –Aaron Shackelford recorded his fifth multi-hit game of the season on Tuesday night, but his two hits were the only hits of the game for Altoona as the Curve were shutout to open a six-game series with the Akron RubberDucks, 4-0, at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Altoona drew eight walks in the loss, their most in a game since May 25, 2023, when the Curve drew 10 walks against the Hartford Yard Goats. With two hits and one hit-by-pitch, the Curve had 11 baserunners in the contest, leaving seven on base with Akron turning three double plays and catching Jase Bowen stealing.
Chris Gau started the bullpen game for the Curve, tossing 2.2 innings scoreless innings before allowing two singles and a three-run home run to Aaron Bracho in the third inning to end his outing. The three runs were unearned after Tsung-Che Cheng committed a throwing error attempting to catch Kahlil Watson in a rundown after Gau had attempted to pick him off at second base.
Cameron Junker allowed one run in an inning of work, allowing a single and walking three batters in the frame to score the run. Grant Ford tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief prior to Junker entering the game in the fifth inning. Brad Case turned three scoreless innings with three strikeouts without allowing a hit to follow Junker before Nick Dombkowski worked a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth with a strikeout.
Joe Perez matched a career-high with three walks in the loss, with the last time coming on May 12, 2021, in a game with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, High-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. It is the third time Altoona has been shutout this season.
Altoona continues its six-game series with the Akron RubberDucks, Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians, on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. Altoona will send RHP Bubba Chandler to the mound to face RHP Tommy Mace for Akron.
