Rogers, homers help Wings to 6-1 win

Bernier, Rodriguez, Peterson blast HRs
April 27, 2015

Taylor Rogers allowed just two hits over eight innings, and three home runs helped power the Rochester Red Wings to a 6-1 win over the Columbus Clippers Monday night at Frontier Field. The series continues with a 6:35 p.m. game Tuesday, another Fan 4-Pack Night with four tickets, hot dogs, drinks and a yearbook for $36 ($40 day of game). Complete promotion details below...

A pair of left-handers opposed each other Monday night, with Red Wings rookie Rogers matching up with Nick Maronde. On a cool night with a light mist falling at game time, both starters turned in a solid first three innings. Rogers allowed just a walk while notching a pair of strikeouts through three, and Maronde worked around two hits and an error to keep the Wings scoreless.

UR Medicine Sports MedicineRogers walked a pair of batters with one out in the fourth inning, but a quick double play turned that scoring chance into a missed opportunity for the Clippers. Rogers walked three through four innings, matching his season high for bases on balls so far this season.

In the fifth inning, the Clippers picked up their first hit and scored the first run of the game. Destin Hood hit a one-out triple, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam Moore to give Columbus a 1-0 lead.

The Wings came right back to take the lead in their half of the fifth. Eric Farris singled with one out, and moved to second base on a balk by Maronde. Doug Bernier followed with his first home run of the season, a line drive to left field on a 3-1 pitch that made it 2-1 Red Wings. Eddie Rosario followed with a single, then Reynaldo Rodriguez blasted a two-run homer over the auxiliary scoreboard and onto Plymouth Avenue extending the lead to 4-1. It was the first homer for Rodriguez, and boosted his hitting streak to 12 games.

Columbus put two runners on with one out in the sixth inning, but another double play helped Rogers escape a jam.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Wings put runners at second and third with one out, and Maronde was lifted in favor of C.C. Lee. But Lee got a pair of groundball outs to strand the runners and play moved to the seventh inning.

Maronde (0-3) worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four earned walks. He walked one, struck out three and threw 101 pitches - 64 for strikes.

Rogers (2-0) worked into the eighth inning for the first time this season, and used just 12 pitches to set down the side in order. Rogers threw 114 pitches over eight innings, 67 for strikes; he allowed just two hits and four walks along with the one earned run, striking out four.

In the bottom of the eighth inning against new pitcher Kyle Crockett, Brock Peterson connected for his team-leading fourth home run of the season. Farris added an RBI single to push the Wings' lead to 6-1.

A.J. Achter pitched the ninth inning for Rochester. Achter struck out the first two batters he faced, and Ortiz made a sliding catch in right field to take away a hit from Zach Walters for the final out of the game.

Martinez had three hits, while Rosario, Bernier, Farris and Danny Ortiz each had two hits. The Wings out-hit the Clippers 13-2.

NOTES: OF Wilkin Ramirez joined the Wings Monday from Florida, where he had been rehabbing from a pulled muscle injury. He is currently on the Wings' disabled list...Cleveland Indians 1B Nick Swisher will join the Clippers here on Tuesday, and is scheduled to play on Tuesday and Wednesday as part of his minor league rehab assignment.
