Wings wallop Bats 12-6
Chris Parmelee homered twice and drove in five runs, as the Red Wings pounded the Louisville Bats 12-6 Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. The Wings hit the road for eight games, then return home on Tuesday May 13 to open an eight-game homestand.
Rochester's Alex Meyer had struck out 11 batters in each of his last two starts, most recently this past Monday here. On Sunday, Meyer set down the Bats in order in the first inning, with Chris Nelson caught looking at a third strike for the final out of the inning.
Bats starter Chad Reineke was making his third start and seventh appearance of the season, and was knocked around by Buffalo April 28 allowing seven runs and seven hits in 1 2/3 innings. Wings leadoff man Eric Farris drilled a 2-2 pitch from Reineke up the middle for a single to open the Rochester half of the first inning.
Things quickly got worse for Reineke - and much better for the Wings - when James Beresford picked up an infield hit that glanced off of Reineke's glove. That set the stage for Parmelee, who hit a mammoth home run on a 3-1 pitch. The ball went straight up and then over the roof of The Nest picnic pavilion in right field, and was Parmelee's sixth homer of the year.
Wilkin Ramirez followed with a single, and Oswaldo Arcia flew out for the first out of the inning. Deibinson Romero's base hit put two runners on for Doug Bernier, who blooped a hit down the right field line. The hit drove home a run, and Romero alertly hustled home on a throwing error by first baseman Mike Costanzo. Eduardo Nunez added an RBI single, and when the inning was over the Wings batted around, tallied seven hits and staked Meyer to a 6-0 lead. The seven hits in the inning was a new high for the offense this season.
Parmelee had a 15-game hitting streak end on Saturday night, and started a new streak of sorts on Sunday. Batting with Beresford on in the second, Parmelee ripped a line drive home run that skipped off the top of the yellow top of the fence, into the bullpen, then bounded back out onto the field. The homer boosted Rochester's lead to 8-0.
Nunez singled to begin the Wings' offense in the third inning, after Bernier popped out to first. Dan Rohlfing followed with a single of his own, prompting the Bats to replace Reineke with Nick Schmidt. Farris and Beresford flew out and grounded out, respectively, to end the inning, with Parmelee set to lead off the fourth.
Meyer continued to throw at a pace of one strikeout per inning, with his fourth coming in the fourth inning. This time, Meyer caught Felix Perez looking. Bats manager Jim Riggleman disagreed with the call, prompting home plate umpire Jonathan Bailey to eject him from the game. Meyer's scoreless streak ended at 15 2/3 innings when Costanzo hit a home run off the right field scoreboard, bringing in Nelson and putting the Bats on the board. Meyer tallied his fifth strikeout to end the inning.
Parmelee stayed hot with a double to the right field corner, which started a four-run fourth inning for the Wings. Oswaldo Arcia hit a double to the center field wall. With Arcia's double, every starting Wing had tallied a hit, most against Reineke (0-3). The Wings nearly batted around once again, starting with Romero's walk. Arcia scored off a Nunez single. Rolfing hit a flyball just past Perez in right field to score Romero and Nunez to give Rochester a 12-2 lead at the end of the fourth.
The Bats started their comeback right away, starting off with an Argenis Diaz walk. Meyer gave up another walk and a double to Perez before Edgar Ibarra replaced the starter on the mound with two outs. Just shy of earning the win, Meyer struck out five while allowing five hits, including a homer, and four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Meyer threw 92 pitches, 59 for strikes.
Ibarra got off to a shaky start with a couple wild pitches. The first allowed Perez to advance to third while Thomas Neal began his at-bat. Neal faced a full count before Ibarra tossed another high ball to record his first walk on the day. Costanzo ended the Bats rally with an unassisted groundout to Parmelee.
Chad Rogers replaced Schmidt on the mound in the sixth with the Bats still trailing 12-4. He first walked Romero, but retired the next three batters on flyouts.
The Bats chipped away once again to narrow the Wings' lead to 12-5 in the seventh inning. Ibarra walked Jason Bourgeois, who advanced on a single by Ruben Gotay and a flyout by Nelson. Beresford tried to double up Gotay and Perez, but couldn't catch Perez at first, as Bourgeois scored the Bats fifth run.
Ibarra (2-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings with two hits and an earned run allowed, walking two and striking out one. Matt Guerrier took over to start the eighth inning, and allowed a single. In the ninth, Gotay homered off Guerrier with one out.
Nunez had three hits and two RBI, and four other Wings players - Farris, Beresford, Ramirez, and Rohlfing - had two hits each,.

NOTES: The Wings' 17 hits tied the team single game high, accomplished April 20 at Syracuse...The seven hits in the first inning was the most in one inning this season for the Wings' offense...Top prospect Byron Buxton, who sprained his left wrist in a Minor League Spring Training game on March 16, was officially activated from the 7-day disabled list at Class A Advanced Fort Myers on Sunday. Buxton, ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect by MLB.com, is expected to play at Fort Myers until he's deemed ready to move up to Double-A New Britain. |

This Day in Red Wings History
2005 - The first five hitters in the Rochester lineup each had at least two hits, and Dave Gassner improved to 3-0 as the Red Wings cruised to a 7-1 win at Pawtucket on Wednesday afternoon. After the game, Minnesota called up INF Terry Tiffee and sent C Corky Miller to Rochester.

1991 - Derek Bell of Syracuse, already on his way to a monster season, bangs out four more hits as the Chiefs down Richmond 10-4. Bell drives in a pair of runs to go along with his 4-5 effort. The 22-year-old Bell turned out to be the IL's dominant offensive star in 1991, leading the circuit in batting (.346), hits (158), runs (89), RBI (93), and total bases (243). To the surprise of no one, Derek Bell was named the International League's Most Valuable Player.

The Orioles shortstop marks the occasion by hitting a double and a home run in the BIrds' 8-6 loss to Minnesota at the Metrodome.
