Comeback win for Wings

August 25, 2014

The Rochester Red Wings scored three runs in the sixth to defeat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 4-2 Monday night at Frontier Field. The win keeps the Wings within 1 1/2 games of the wild card spot.

The Wings are off Tuesday, play in Syracuse Wednesday and Thursday, and return home Friday night for Red Wings Hall of Fame Night, the Stan Musial bobblehead giveaway and post-game fireworks. Complete promotions details below...

Alex Meyer walked Rob Refsnyder with two outs in the first inning, and Kyle Roller followed with a double that glanced off the glove of Eric Farris in center field. Refsnyder scored for an early 1-0 RailRiders lead. It was just the third earned run Meyer has allowed in the first inning this season (26 innings).

Final Two Home GamesRed Wings second baseman James Beresford, fifth in the league in hits coming into play Monday with 137, added to his total with a single off Brian Mitchell to open the bottom of the first. That hit paid dividends quickly, as Pedro Florimon followed with his third triple of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Mitchell struck out the next two batters, and a groundout by Chris Colabello left Florimon at third base.

The RailRiders threatened again in the third inning, opening the frame with back-to-back doubles putting runners at second and third with no outs. Colabello made a fine defensive play to retire Ramon Flores for the first out, and Meyer fanned Refsnyder for the second out. Roller was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Zoilo Almonte flew out to leave the bases full. Meyer has been at his best with runners in scoring position and two outs this season, with batters now hitting just .098 (5-for-51, 21 strikeouts) in those situations.

Both teams turned double plays in the fourth inning to keep the game tied at 1-1. The Wings missed out on a scoring chance that had runners at first and second with none out.

In the fifth inning, the RailRiders went back out in front on a one-out, RBI triple from Ramon Flores.

Meyer had thrown 90 pitches (54 strikes) when he took the mound for the top of the sixth. He had a runner on first with two outs when Doug Bernier made a slick fielding play on a groundball for the final out.

Mitchell was done after five innings, having allowed five hits and one earned run plus two walks. Mitchell struck out four and threw 91 pitches, 54 for strikes. Preston Claiborne took over on the mound, and was greeted by a Chris Herrmann double. A flyball out by Josmil Pinto moved Herrmann to third base and with the infield pulled in, Claiborne walked Colabello. That's when Daniel Ortiz lined a double to right field, bringing in Herrmann with the run that tied the game at 2-2. Colabello scored on a passed ball, and the Wings had their first lead of the night at 3-2. Farris followed with a sacrifice fly that brought home Ortiz, making it 4-2 Wings.

Meyer allowed seven hits and two earned runs in his six innings pitched, walking three and striking out four. Meyer threw 105 pitches - the most he's thrown in a game this season - with 66 for strikes. A.J. Achter relieved Meyer to start the seventh inning. Achter set down the side in order in the seventh, was aided by the Wings' third double play of the night in the eighth, and struck out two in the ninth.
