IronPigs top Wings in 11
Chase d'Arnaud had three hits, including an 11th inning RBI single as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs topped the Rochester Red Wings 6-5 Thursday night at Frontier Field. Jose Martinez and Reynaldo Rodriguez homered for the Wings.

Red Wings starter Alex Meyer had an instant jam to work through, after the IronPigs loaded the bases with one out. Jordan Danks singled up the middle to bring in a pair of runs for a 2-0 Lehigh Valley lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, a leadoff single by Rodriguez and a double down the right field line from Josmil Pinto put runners in scoring position with no outs. After a pop out by Danny Ortiz, Wilkin Ramirez drove in his first run of the season with a sacrifice fly, scoring Rodriguez and cutting the Lehigh Valley lead to 2-1.
Leading off the bottom of the third, Martinez belted his first home run of the season and broke his 0-for-20 hitless streak to tie the game at 2-2. After an Eric Farris groundout to shortstop, Argenis Diaz lined a single to left field and took second base on a Lehigh Valley passed ball. Eric Fryer collected his seventh RBI of the season with a base hit to the right-center gap, scoring Diaz and giving the Red Wings a 3-2 lead. Rodriguez joined in on the action and cleared the bases with his third home run of the season, that pushed the Wings lead to 5-2.
Lehigh Valley drew closer in the top of the fifth as Cord Phelps lined a one out single, and moved to third on a fielding error by Ortiz. After a pop-out by Maikel Franco, Phelps scored the Iron Pigs' third run after a base hit by Cody Asche.
In the top of the sixth inning, Dominic Brown reached second base on an error by Rodriguez. Meyer got two quick outs, but Chris McGuiness collected his eight RBI of the season with a double to right field that cut the Red Wings lead to 5-4.
In the seventh, Lehigh Valley tied the score. Meyer got a strikeout, then walked Chase d'Arnaud. Logan Darnell relieved Meyer and gave up a single, and an error by Ramirez allowed d'Arnaud to move to third base. Mark Hamburger took over for Darnell and gave up a game-tying RBI hit to Franco. Ortiz cut down the go-ahead run when he threw out Asche at home to end the inning.
Meyer worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, five runs (three earned), and two walks with four strikeouts. He threw 105 pitches, 62 for strikes.
Tim Stauffer made his second appearance as part of a rehab assignment with the Wings, working the eighth and ninth innings and setting down all six batters he faced.
Caleb Thielbar pitched a scoreless 10th inning, and the Wings put the winning run on base against Adam Loewen (1-1) in the bottom of the 10th when Fryer drew a walk to lead off. Loewen set down the next three batters and play moved to the 11th inning.
The IronPigs put runners at first and third with one out in the top of the 11th against Thielbar (1-1), and d'Arnaud's third hit of the night put Lehigh Valley ahead 6-5.
Seth Rosin retired the Wings in order in the 11th, picking up his second save.
The teams combined for 24 hits and five errors. The Wings made three errors, and came into the game with just 12 errors - the fewest in the league entering play Thursday. It was the first extra innings contest of the season for the Red Wings.

1884 - A brand new baseball organization named the Eastern League begins its first championship season in Richmond, Virginia. The league, which after several name changes would come to be known as the International League, holds its first regular season game as the club from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania travels to Richmond to take on the Virginians. It was the start of a rocky inaugural season for the upstart Eastern League. Harrisburg disbanded in July, and in August Richmond left to join the American Association. The Eastern League started with eight teams in 1884, finishing with just five. Trenton was awarded the first pennant in the circuit's history after the club with the best record, Wilmington, left the League in August.
