IronPigs edge Wings 6-5

May 16, 2015

Russ Canzler had three hits and scored three runs, as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs edged the Rochester Red Wings 6-5 Saturday night at Frontier Field. Danny Ortiz hit a two-run homer for the Wings.

The series concludes with a 1:35 p.m. game Sunday; it's a Knot Hole Gang Kids' Club game, and kids can run the bases with Spikes and Mittsy after the game. Complete promotion details below...

The IronPigs took an early lead against Wings starter Pat Dean, combining three hits and a wild pitch to produce a two-run first inning.

Dean found himself in another difficult situation in the second, allowing three consecutive singles to start off the inning. Thanks in part to some stellar defense from center fielder Eric Farris, Dean was able to get out of the inning giving up only one run. Farris had a spectacular diving catch to register the first out of the inning, preventing the IronPigs from scoring. The IronPigs led 3-0 after two innings.

More trouble for Dean (3-3) in the third inning, as he allowed a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the inning to Russ Canzler.

The Red Wings got on the board against IronPigs starter Joely Rodriguez in the third inning when Jose Martinez scored on a groundout by Rey Rodriguez after leading off the inning with a single, making the score 4-1.

Wilkin Ramirez helped the Wings continue to chip away at the deficit in the fourth inning, after he reached base with his first double of the season. Ramirez was later driven home by James Beresford, pulling the Wings to within two, 4-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Wings drew closer when Josmil Pinto doubled and Ortiz singled to open the frame. A sacrifice fly from Brock Peterson brought home Pinto to make it a 4-3 game. Another hit from Beresford put runners at first and third with two out, and Hector Neris was brought out of the bullpen. Neris retired Martinez to strand the runners and play moved to the seventh inning.

Dean was done after six innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs. He walked one, struck out one and threw 100 pitches 68 for strikes. Rodriguez worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs. Rodriguez did not issue a walk, and struck out five while throwing 96 pitches, 61 for strikes.

Logan Darnell took over on the mound for Rochester to open the seventh, and quickly retired the first two batters he faced. But the IronPigs put together three straight singles to bring in a run. Mark Hamburger replaced Darnell, and another run scored on a fielder's choice to make it 6-3 Lehigh Valley.

Ortiz clubbed his team-leading sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth, a two-run shot that also brought home Pinto and brought the Wings to within a run at 6-5.

A.J. Achter pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Red Wings.

Lehigh Valley out-hit the Wings 13-11.

It Happened This Day
1984 - The Twins sell 51,863 tickets to their 8-7 loss to the Blue Jays, but only 6,346 fans show up for the game. The skewed numbers are the result of a massive ticket buyout plan organized by Minneapolis businessman Harvey Mackay to keep the Twins in Minnesota; if the club does not sell 2.41 million tickets this season it can break its lease with the Metrodome. Taking advantage of reduced prices on the Family Day promotion, Mackay pays $218,718 for 44,166 tickets.
