Two-Hit Wonder: Power win 3-1

(Hickory, N.C. - May 18, 2015) - The West Virginia Power defeated the Hickory Crawdads 3-1 in the first game of the series at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night. John Sever worked a no-hitter into the fifth and earned the victory as the Power tossed a two-hitter for the first time since August of last season.

West Virginia took advantage of a rare error by the Crawdads in the first. Cole Tucker led off the first by reaching on an error and advanced to second on a stolen base. Connor Joe then flew out to right to advance Tucker a base and Taylor Gushue scored Tucker with a bloop single to left.

In the fifth the Power scored another run. Elvis Escobar led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a Tyler Filliben single. Escobar then scored when Tucker hit an RBI single to center.

Sever was stellar for West Virginia by tossing five innings of hitless baseball before he surrendered his first hit in the sixth inning. Josh Morgan led off the sixth with a single up the middle and reached third when Sever's pickoff throw sailed over the head of Connor Joe. With one out, Michael De Leon hit an RBI single to score Morgan from third.

Pablo Reyes tacked on an insurance run for the Power in the eighth. The second baseman clubbed a solo home run to lead off the inning and made the score 3-1. Reyes' five home runs are the most on the Power team.

Sever (2-1) earned the victory after he surrendered one unearned run on two hits over 5.1 innings of work. Nick Gardewine (2-3) suffered the loss. Montana DuRapau tossed 2.2 innings of perfect baseball to earn the hold and Junior Lopez notched his second save of the year after a perfect ninth.

The Power (21-16) continue the three-game series with the Crawdads (26-10) on Tuesday evening at L.P. Frans Stadium. West Virginia will send RHP Yeudy Garcia (1-2, 2.30) to the hill in game two of the series and he will be opposed by the undefeated RHP Ariel Jurado (5-0, 3.44). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. while pregame on the Power baseball network is slated for 5:40 p.m.

West Virginia returns home on Thursday, May 21 for a four-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds. Thursday's game will be a Thirsty Thursday presented by 96.1 The Wolf with $1 12 oz. drafts and $2 16 oz. cans. Also highlighting the four-game homestand is Redneck Night IV with a Camo Hat Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans. The award-winning promotion will also feature Redneck Idol, an appearance by History Channel's Appalachian Outlaws, and a pregame and postgame concert by the Davisson Brothers Band.
