Four Square: Power fall to Sand Gnats 9-1

Power surrender pair of four-run innings in loss to Savannah

(Charleston, WV - June 9, 2015) - The West Virginia Power were defeated by the Savannah Sand Gnats 9-1 on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. Savannah used a pair of four-run innings to down West Virginia in game one of the series in Charleston.

The game started off well for the Power thanks to a run in the first inning. Pablo Reyes hit a home run to left field to give the Power an early lead. For Reyes, it was his team-best sixth home run of the season.

Yeudy Garcia struck out two in the first inning and worked the Sand Gnats down in order in the third but the all-star ran into trouble in the third. After allowing a leadoff single and a walk, Luis Guillorme hit an infield single allowing one run to score but Savannah got another run on the play thanks to a throwing error by the Power defense. Two batters later, Eudor Garcia hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to right to make it a 4-1 game.

Savannah struck for four more runs in the fifth inning off reliever Jake Burnette. Eudor Garcia hit his second home run of the game with a runner on to give the Sand Gnats a 6-1 advantage. Tomas Nido made it 7-1 with a sacrifice fly and Patrick Biondi hit an RBI double to give the Sand Gnats the seven-run lead.

In the sixth the Sand Gnats added another run. John Mora pulled a triple to score Wuilmer Becerra, which gave the Sand Gnats a 9-1 advantage.

Yeudy Garcia (4-4) suffered the loss after he surrendered four runs on five hits over four innings of work. Casey Meisner (6-1) earned the win after seven innings of one-run ball.

West Virginia (34-24) continues the three-game series against Savannah (31-27) on Wednesday evening. LHP Stephen Tarpley (3-0, 1.20) will pitch for the Power and will be opposed by a Sand Gnats RHP Casey Delgado (2-0, 1.80). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. while pregame on Charleston's ESPN Radio 104.5 FM and 1490 AM, www.wvpower.com, and the TuneIn radio app is slated for 6:45 p.m.
