Darnell's gem snaps three-game skid

Rochester offense supports with a season-high 20 hits
August 24, 2015

SYRACUSE, NY - Logan Darnell took a perfect game into the sixth inning and a no-hitter into the seventh as the Rochester Red Wings snapped a three-game losing streak with a 9-0 win over the Syracuse Chiefs Monday night at NBT Bank Stadium.

The shutout was the second of Darnell's career, the other coming June 20, 2013 for Double-A New Britain. Rochester has shut out opponents 18 times this season, most in the International League since Norfolk also had 18 in 1995 and most by a Red Wings team since the 1974 Governors' Cup Championship squad had 24.

Darnell (4-1) did not allow a runner to reach until an error by Jose Martinez began the sixth inning. The first hit he surrendered was a one-out infield single by Emmanuel Burriss in the seventh that deflected off of Darnell's foot. Syracuse put two on with no outs in the ninth and pushed a runner to third for the first time all night with one out in the final frame but Darnell got back-to-back strikeouts - his eighth and ninth of the night - to secure the five-hit gem.

The 6.1 innings is the deepest a Red Wing has taken a no-hit bid since Liam Hendriks started the first 6.1 innings without allowing a hit on July 25, 2013 vs. Lehigh Valley.

Lost in the terrific performance by Darnell was a season-high 20 hits by the Red Wings (67-63), 10 of which came in the first three innings. Rochester pounded out 12 against Chiefs (58-72) starter Richard Bleier (5-2) in 4.2 innings. The Wings had 17 singles, two doubles and a homer from Danny Ortiz in the eighth inning.

Every Red Wing had at least one hit except Kennys Vargas. Five players had three hits and Xavier Avery drove in three runs in the win. The 20 hits are the most by a Rochester team since they had 25 in a 19-inning marathon on August 5, 2012 at Toledo. It is the first occurrence in a nine-inning game since the Wings had 20 on May 14, 2010 vs. Louisville.
