Brad Markey named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week

Right-hander is third consecutive Pelican to win weekly award
September 8, 2015

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (SEPTEMBER 8, 2015) - In conjunction with Minor League Baseball, the Carolina League announced its Players of the Week on Monday, naming Myrtle Beach Pelicans right-handed pitcher Brad Markey the winner for the week of August 31-September 7. He is the third consecutive Pelicans player to win a weekly award, and it is his first career weekly award.

Markey, 23, wins the honor after twirling seven shutout innings against the Wilmington Blue Rocks en route to his seventh win of the season on September 4. He allowed just three hits in that game and walked none while striking out six.

In nine appearances, including eight starts, Markey is 7-0 with a 1.15 ERA since joining the Pelicans on July 7. In 55 innings with the Birds, he has fanned 40 batters while walking just six.

Since his Pelicans debut, Markey has proven to be one of the elite arms in the Carolina League as well as the Cubs system. His 1.15 ERA is the lowest in the league and in the Cubs minor league system in that span; it also ranks among the top-10 lowest among all full season minor leaguers. Since his Pelicans debut, his 0.75 WHIP is the second-lowest in professional baseball, trailing only Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (0.70).

Overall, combined with a 2.48 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP in 29 innings pitched with Class-A South Bend, Markey's 0.82 WHIP in 84 innings of work is the best in Minor League Baseball since his first appearance on May 17. In that span, his 1.61 ERA is the second-lowest among full-season minor leaguers.

Between the two levels, 21 of his appearances have been out of the bullpen this year, and he also made one start with South Bend before he was promoted to Myrtle Beach.

Markey joins right-handers Jonathan Martinez and Tyler Skulina as the only other Pelicans hurlers to win Carolina League Pitcher of the Week awards. Markey was also named the Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July.

The Chicago Cubs selected Markey as a senior in the 19th round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Virginia Tech. The right-hander spent his freshman season at Georgia Tech and a sophomore campaign at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida, before becoming ACC teammates with current Pelicans outfielder Mark Zagunis with the Hokies.

Five Pelicans hitters have been named Offensive Player of the Week this season, including Victor Caratini, Ben Carhart, Zagunis, Kevin Brown, and Billy McKinney. Zagunis was also named Cubs Minor League Player of the Month for June.

As a team, more Pelicans players have won more weekly awards (8) than any other Cubs affiliate.

Other Players of the Week in the Cubs system are: Ryan Williams (Southern League, August 10-16); Erick Leal (Midwest League, August 3-9); Wilson Contreras (SOU, July 27-August 2); Adbert Alzolay (Northwest League, July 27-August 2); Jeffrey Baez (MID, July 13-19); Christian Villanueva (Pacific Coast League, June 1-7 and July 13-19); Yasiel Balaguert (MID, May 25-31); Dan Vogelbach (SOU, April 9-19 and April 20-26); Cael Brockmeyer (MID, April 9-19).

Carolina Mudcats third baseman Carlos Franco was named the Carolina League Offensive Player of the Week.
