Sniffed Out: 'Dogs take 2-1 pitchers duel
(Charleston, WV- June 17, 2016)- The Charleston Riverdogs earned at least a split of the four game series against the West Virginia Power after taking game two 2-1 Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power pitching staff combined to allow just four hits and two runs, however the West Virginia offense was held to just the single run.
Starters Logan Sendelbach and Yefrey Ramirez traded zeroes through the first three frames, until the 'Dogs broke through with a pair in the fourth. Jhalen Jackson led off with a double, and was singled home by Angel Aguilar. One batter later Leonardo Molina plated Aguilar with a run scoring single to give Charleston a 2-0 advantage.
Those were the only runs given up by Sendelbach (4-2) across five innings, along with three walks while striking out five.
Ramirez (4-1) shutout West Virginia over his five and a third innings, allowing just three hits and three walks.
The Power picked up their lone run of the game in the seventh. Following a Logan Hill walk and Christian Kelley single, Tyler Filliben knocked a sacrifice bunt and Tito Polo hit a run scoring groundout to halve the deficit to 2-1.
Sean Keselica and Julio Eusebio combined to shutout Charleston over the final four innings, limiting the 'Dogs to just two base runners on one a hit and a walk.
West Virginia rallied to put the tying and winning run on base in the ninth, however could not bring either home as Andrew Schwaab struck out Tito Polo to notch his league leading 13th save of the year and Charleston hung on for the 2-1 victory.
Kelley led the Power offense going 3-4, with six of the nine Power batters recording at least a hit. The Power are now 11-2 in games started by Sendelbach, with both losses coming against the 'Dogs.
Game three of the series is set for Saturday night, with Bret Helton getting the start for the Power matched up against 'Dogs starter Daris Vargas. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. at Appalachian Power Park.
