Wings Fall in Extras

The Red Wings lost 5-4 to the Louisville Bats in 12 innings Friday night at Frontier Field. The Wings were limited to only one hit by Louisville starter Keyvius Sampson, but rallied in the seventh inning. The game wound up tied 4-4 and headed into extras, and the Bats managed to score a run in the 12th to secure the victory.

The Wings started the game with a nice running play in center field by Eddie Rosario. Shortstop Wilfredo Tovar nearly followed it up with a diving stop, but the ball got just past him to give Carlos Triunfel his first hit of the day. Triunfel then stole second, but Wings starter Logan Darnell struck out two straight batters to end the inning.

The bottom of the first started eerily similar. Bats starter Keyvius Sampson earned a quick groundout, but then Jorge Polanco reached first after third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean botched a grab, and he later stole second base. Sampson then got Rosario to pop out. In his first Triple-A at-bat after being sent to Rochester on a rehab assignment, Miguel Sano worked a full count and drew a walk. Sampson stifled the Wings momentum and struck out Kennys Vargas to end the inning.

Hernan Iribarren singled to start the third inning, and one batter later, Triunfel layed down a bunt that was fielded beautifully by Darnell. Iribarren advanced to second on the play, and later moved to third after Scott Schebler popped out to center. Steve Selsky then hit a bloop into center field that was nearly caught on a slide by Rosario, but the ball bounced just off his glove. Iribarren scored on the play to give the Bats a 1-0 lead. The next play, Darnell picked off Selsky at first to end the inning.

Sampson cruised through the second, third and fourth innings, as he recorded nine straight outs with two strikeouts in the process to increase his total to 10 straight outs.

Despite allowing a run in the third, Darnell was equally impressive in the fourth. He struck out the first two batters of the frame and recorded a quick groundout to end the inning.

Darnell struggled to start the fifth, however, as he allowed a leadoff single and then walked Iribarren to give the Bats two runners. Triunfel then came to bat and blasted a three-run home run to extend the Bats lead to 4-0. By pitching through the fifth, Darnell extended the Wings streak of at least five innings pitched by a starter to 46 straight games.

Sampson's streak of 11 straight batters retired came to an end in the bottom of the fifth as he walked Adam Brett Walker. The walk didn't put a halt on Sampson's impressive outing, though. The righty set down the next two batters to end the inning.

Donald Lutz began the sixth by grounding out to first on a disputed call. First baseman James Beresford fielded the ball and started running to first base, but instead threw to a covering Darnell on a close play. Darnell then earned two straight outs to end the inning, finishing the frame with another punchout.

Ryan O'Rourke replaced Darnell to start the seventh inning. Darnell went six innings while allowing four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. He threw 95 pitches, 63 of which were for strikes. O'Rourke looked strong as he earned three quick outs with one strikeout.

Sampson came out to start the seventh, as well. He threw six shutout innings while allowing only one hit with four strikeouts and two walks. Sampson was replaced by left-hander Nick Routt. While facing his first batter, Routt allowed a single to Tommy Field. The hit was the Wings first since the first inning. After a strikeout by Vargas, Schafer blooped a single into right field to give the Wings some momentum. Routt then picked up another strikeout to Walker. In the next at-bat, Routt threw 10 pitches to Wilfredo Tovar before walking him to load the bases for the Wings.

Routt was replaced by right-hander Drew Hayes. John Ryan Murphy then blasted a clutch three-run double to decrease the Wings deficit to 4-3. The next play, Beresford reached on an error by shortstop Juan Perez. The Wings kept up their hot hitting with a single from Polanco that scored Murphy to tie the game at 4-4. Rosario flew out to left field to end the Wings rally.

J.T. Chargois replaced O'Rourke to start the eighth inning. O'Rourke threw one shutout inning with a strikeout. Chargois worked quickly through the inning as he struck out two batters.

Stephen Johnson came on for Hayes in the bottom of the eighth and began by striking out Field. Vargas then came up and lightly singled into center field for his first hit of the day. With just one out, Johnson walked Schafer to give the Wings runners at first and second. Walker came up with an RBI opportunity, but struck out for his second of the game. Tovar flied out to end the frame.

Beresford recorded a single after first baseman Brandon Allen kicked the ball, which extended his hitting streak to six games. With a full count and two outs in the game, Rosario lined a shot right back to the pitcher, which was caught to end the inning and send the game to the 10th inning.

Alex Wimmers replaced Chargois in the 10th inning. Chargois was effective in two innings, as he only allowed two hits while striking out two. Wimmers got a quick out to start the 10th, but gave up a single to Truinfel for his third hit of the day. Field then made a nice play at third to record the second out of the inning before Wimmers got Selsky to pop out.

Stephen Wickens walked in the bottom of the 10th and later advanced to second. The Bats replaced Johnson with Jumbo Diaz to face Walker. Walker got a hold of a pitch from Diaz, but popped out to center field.

In the top of the 11th, Wimmers recorded a groundout and strikeout before Walker made a spectacular sliding catch to end the inning.

Diaz cruised through the first two Wings batters in the bottom of the 11th, but Beresford reached on an error by Triunfel to give the Wings offense some life. Polanco couldn't capitalize, however, as he popped out to end the frame.

Wimmers was replaced by Sean Burnett in the top of the 12th.. Wimmers threw two scoreless innings allowing just one hit with one strikeout. Burnett walked Berset to start the inning, and the Bats capitalized with an RBI single by Iribarren to put Louisville up 5-4.

The Wings failed to mount any sort of comeback as Diaz struck out the side to end the game. The benches cleared after Wickens struck out to end the game and words were exchanged, but each team quickly returned to their dugouts.

 

 

NOTES: Twins INF/OF Miguel Sano played his first rehab game with the Red Wings Friday, going 0-for-1 with a walk while playing five innings.

1919 - George "Hi-Pockets" Kelly hit four home runs for Rochester in the Wings' 19-0 road victory over Reading. Kelly, who went on to a Hall-of-Fame career, is still the only Red Wing with a four homer game to his credit. Three other Rochester home runs were hit that game, giving them a franchise record of seven.
 

2003 - 26-year-old second baseman Aaron Miles has a monster night for Charlotte, banging out five hits (including two doubles) in six trips to the plate. His five hits tie a franchise record, but would not be enough in this game as Syracuse wins 3-2 in 12 innings. Miles is in the midst of a great season for Charlotte. For the year he would hit at a .304 clip, adding 11 homers and 50 RBI. Most impressive was his total of 166 hits, a single-season best for the Knights during their participation in the International League. Miles would be named the IL Rookie of the Year in 2003.
