Jones collects four hits in matinee loss at Frederick

All-Star outfielder becomes first CL hitter to reach 100 hits in 2016
July 11, 2016

FREDERICK, Md. (July 11, 2016) - Hunter Jones notched the second four-hit game of his professional career, giving him 100 for the season, but Frederick rallied for an 11-7 victory over Winston-Salem in Monday afternoon's finale at NYMEO Field.

Jones mustered three singles and a double and drove home a pair of runs to become the first Carolina Leaguer and third High-A position player to the 100-hit plateau. He also stands in the top five in the CL in games (86), at-bats (346), runs (61) and stolen bases (31).

However, Jones' big effort was not enough in a see-saw contest. Winston-Salem (8-10, 36-52) led 7-5 through five innings, but the Keys (10-8, 46-42) sent 10 men to the plate in their go-ahead five-run sixth inning. In his High-A debut, right-hander Zach Thompson had overcome a rocky beginning to retired nine of 10 at one point from the third to the fifth inning.

Thompson ran into some trouble in the sixth and exited with two men aboard and one down. Danny Dopico (0-3) replaced the newcomer and retired the first man he faced before surrendering back-to-back RBI singles to tie the contest. Both of those men scored on a three-run blast by D.J. Stewart that thrust Frederick in front for good.

It was a see-saw contest for five innings. Nick Basto, who reached safely in four of his five trips to the plate, gave the Dash a first-inning lead with an RBI single. After Frederick knotted the score on a Stewart RBI groundout in the home half of the first, Winston-Salem reclaimed the lead thanks to run-scoring hits from Brett Austin and Jones in the second.

Frederick seized its first edge on a Cam Kneeland grand slam in the third, but Winston immediately responded with four in the fourth, capped by a Basto double.

The Keys' bullpen trio of Trevor Belicek, Jeff Beliveau (3-0) and Ryan Meisinger managed to blank the Dash over the final five innings, stranding four in the process. On the flip side, Dopico gave up three runs, while Euclides Leyer allowed an eighth-inning tally to finish the scoring.

In the losing effort, eight Winston-Salem starters collected at least one hit, while six men scored at least one run. The four-game series as a whole featured 60 runs, 18 of which came in this finale.

Following a league-wide off day Tuesday, the Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for a seven-game homestand that kicks off Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Potomac. Not only is it Krispy Kreme's 79th Birthday Fan Fest, but the Dash will also welcome BB&T Ballpark's two millionth fan.

Southpaw Tanner Banks (4-0, 3.60 ERA) takes to the mound for the Dash against Nationals righty Mark Blackmar (1-0, 1.29 ERA), a former White Sox farmhand. Pregame coverage of Wednesday's game begins at 6:45 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App.
