Piechota fans seven in 1-0 loss to RiverDogs

CHARLESTON, S.C. (April 17, 2018) - Evan Piechota struck out a career high-tying seven batters in six innings of relief, but West Virginia's offense was held to just six hits against a trio of Charleston pitchers as the RiverDogs claimed game two of the three-game series, 1-0, on Tuesday evening at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Charleston pushed across their lone run in the bottom of the first, as Oswaldo Cabrera led off with a double to left. The next batter, Wilkerman Garcia, hit a line drive that deflected off West Virginia starter Sergio Cubilete (0-2) and fell to the grass for a base knock. Cubilete was lifted from the game due to an injury and replaced by Piechota.

The first batter that Piechota faced, Steven Sensley, scored Cabrera with a groundout to the second baseman, giving the RiverDogs the only offense they would need on the night.
Piechota was brilliant on the mound in his third appearance of the season, tossing six innings and giving up two hits, while Blake Weiman was equally as stellar through his two innings of work, striking out four and surrending one hit. 
However, Charleston's arms excelled just a bit more on Tuesday, as Garrett Whitlock (1-1) stymied West Virginia over the first five frames on three hits and two walks while setting down five men via the strikeout. Brian Trieglaff held the Power at bay for three innings of relief, and Matt Wivinis closed the book in the ninth as he pitched around a leadoff single to Rodolfo Castro to secure his fourth save in as many tries. At one point, RiverDogs pitching set down 17 straight West Virginia batters from the second to the seventh innings.
The Power fell by a score of 1-0 for the first time since April 21, 2017, against Lakewood.
West Virginia concludes their three-game series against the Charleston RiverDogs on Wednesday morning at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, with first pitch set for 11:05 a.m. LHP Domingo Robles (0-1, 7.71 ERA) steps to the hill for the Power against Charleston righty Glen Otto (1-1, 3.48 ERA).
