VANCOUVER, BC – A walk-off double from Ryan McCarty with two outs in the bottom of the ninth capped another Canadians comeback win Friday afternoon as the C’s beat the Everett AquaSox [Mariners] 4-3 at Rogers Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.
With the game tied 3-3 to start the ninth, Jean Arnaez singled on an 0-2 pitch to begin the frame and was replaced by pinch runner Glenn Santiago. He scampered to second on a wild pitch in the next at-bat but consecutive strikeouts threatened to send the game to extras. Up stepped McCarty, who turned on the first pitch from Frogs reliever Nick Davila (L, 2-3) and deposited the game-winning hit into the left field corner to complete the come-from-behind victory.
McCarty’s heroics were set up by a crucial two-run eighth that tied the game. Jace Bohrofen led off with a double to set the table for Brennan Orf, who cracked a game-tying two-run shot over the right field wall to even the score after the C’s had fallen behind 3-1.
The game started as a pitcher’s duel, with Chris McElvain and Ty Cummings trading zeroes for the first three frames. Everett broke through for two runs on two hits and three walks in the fourth before the Canadians got one of those runs back in the home half. Orf started that inning with a walk, went to third on a Dylan Rock double then scored when Estiven Machado lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that spoiled the shutout.
Jared Sundstrom belted the second pitch of the fifth inning for his third homer of the year to put the AquaSox back in front by two runs, but that would be the last time a ‘Sox batter crossed the plate on the afternoon.
Alex Amalfi tossed three crucial innings of scoreless relief between the sixth and the eighth to keep the Frogs at bay then Justin Kelly (W, 2-1) put up a zero in the ninth to keep the game tied.
Eight of nine starters contributed something on offense and six had a hit. McCarty led the way with three knocks while Orf and Rock finished with two hits apiece.
Vancouver and Everett square-off in game five of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Rafael Sanchez toes the slab for the C’s opposite AquaSox right-hander Ryan Hawks. The game will air live on the C’s Broadcast Network: Sportsnet 650 and Bally Live. Tickets and more information are available at CanadiansBaseball.com.
