Staten Island, N.Y. - Richmond County Bank Ballpark hosted the IronBirds and the Staten Island Pizza Rats (Yankees) for game three of three. Aberdeen went up early, but four runs in the 5th for Staten Island and master relief pitching ended the IronBirds' hope of getting out the brooms.
ITCHIN' FOR A HIT: Guiyuan Xu, better known as "Itchy," got his second start as an IonBird in the outfield. In the second inning he got his first hit of the seaosn. He snuck an RBI single into leftfield to give the IronBirds a 1-0 lead. Xu would get his second hit as the leadoff man in the top of the seventh.
GRAY(T) EIGHT: Gray Fenter took the hill for the IronBirds and rocked the Yankees for the first four innings. His curveball was virtually unhittable. Fenter struckout eight Yanks.
IT ONLY TAKES ONE: Fenter walked two batters of the fifth inning and was replaced by Javier Echevarria. Echevarria would load the bases and was one strike away from getting out of the inning, but a two-RBI single by Cannan Smith kept the inning alive. Andres Chaparro brought home two more with a double, making it 4-2 Yankees after 5.
QUIET FINALE: Neither team would score a run from that point forward. Aberdeen's Jose Diaz and Josh Keaton paired up to close the game scoreless. Two strikeouts in the top of the 9th ended the series in Staten Island.
BIRD WATCHING: J.C. Escarra had a base hit that extended his hitting streak to seven games. Willy Yahn had his second multi-hit game of the season and Alfredo Gonzalez had his first.
UP NEXT: Sunday afternoon the IronBirds return to Aberdeen as the Star Spangled Banners. Game one against the Vermont Lake Monsters is slated to begin at 4:05.
