Aberdeen, MD: The IronBirds came into the night 1-3 so far in this 2018 campaign. In those four games played, they had scored a combined seven runs. Tonight, they scored seven runs before the 7th inning. They took the win over Tri-City 7-1.
BIG BATS EARLY: No surprise that Willy Yahn and J.C. Escarra played a huge role in sparking this IronBirds offense. Willy Yahn, the 25th round selection for Baltimore last year, started the offense tonight in the 2nd when he doubled down the right field line to score two runs. Then in the 3rd, JC Escarra added two more runs with his own double over the out stretched glove of left fielder, Gilberto Celestino.
WILLIE'S WORLD: Wille Rios made his first appearance this season for the IronBirds and it was a beauty. He went 4.0 innings giving up zero runs and only two hits. He did not get the decision as he did not qualify. Instead, the win would go to Jose Diaz who came in relief for Rios in the 5th.
GASSAWAY FINDING STRIDE: Randolph Gassaway broke through tonight for two hits in his four at bats. The DH for the Ironbirds kept a rally rolling in the third when he collected his second hit in an Aberdeen Uniform. He then scored on the two run Escarra double.
SHUTTIN' IT DOWN: Relievers Zach Matson and Nick Vichio, combined to work 3.1 innings pitched to slam the door shut for the IronBirds. Matson struck out two ValleyCats and Vichio added one himself.
BIRD WATCHIN': Willy Yahn had himself a ball game. The third baseman had three hits tonight and two RBI's. JC Escarra finished the night 2-4 with three RBI's as well. Robert Neustrom saw his four game hitting streak come to an end.
UP NEXT: The IronBirds and Valleycats go to battle again tomorrow night in the rubber match. First pitch will be at 7:05.
