HARRISBURG, PA- Rico Garcia turned in his sixth straight quality start and Brandon Bednar slugged a three-run homer to lead the Hartford Yard Goats to a 5-2 win over the Harrisburg Senators Wednesday night, before 2,584 at FNB Field. One night after Reid Humphreys lost a heart-breaking game on a walk off double, the right-hander returned to throw a scoreless ninth inning for his second save and set up the rubber game of the series Thursday night.
Garcia improved to 4-1 with another solid effort, allowing Harrisburg (58-55) two runs on seven hits over seven innings. It matched his longest outing of the season. The right-hander from Hawaii walked one and struck out five. Wil Crowe, making his AA debut for the Senators, pitched six innings and gave up four runs - one earned - on five hits. He walked four and struck out four.
The Yard Goats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a home run into the right-field bullpen by lefty-hitting Omar Carrizales, but the Senators tied it in their half of the inning on a two-out RBI double by Drew Ward.
Hartford snapped the 1-1 tie in the third, with a three-run home run that Bednar wrapped around the left-field foul pole. A Harrisburg home run by Daniel Johnson over the wall in right-center cut the lead in half in last of the third. Hartford (53-60) added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Roberto Ramos.
Carrizales paced the Yard Goats' eight-hit attack with a home run and double. Daniel Johnson had a home run and single and Raudy Read two hits for the Nationals' affiliate.
The three-game series at Harrisburg wraps up Thursday night at 7:00.   LHP Evan Grills will pitch for the Yard Goats against RHP César Vargas for Harrisburg.  The game will be broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and streamed on newsradio1410.iheart.com and MiLB.com.    The Yard Goats return home to Dunkin' Donuts Park on Friday night, August 10, at 7:05 to host the Bowie Baysox.
