San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino opened a three-game series with the visiting San Jose Giants win walk-off fashion as Sixers' RF Orlando Martinez' sac fly in the bottom of the ninth scored Ryan Scott for a 5-4 win. The Sixers celebration came following Scott dislodging the ball from San Jose catcher Fabian Pena's grip to score the winning run.
Inland d Empire trailed 3-1 entering the sixth inning after San Jose starter Jake Wong held the Sixers to one run on two hits through five frames. Inland Empire got to San Jose (51-60, 21-21) reliever Jesus Tona in the sixth a Leonardo Rivas' ground ball to the right side hit the first base bag and popped over the first baseman and into right for a double. With one out Franklin Torres singled for runners at first and third. With two down Spencer Griffin drilled and RBI single to right cutting the lead to one run. Zane Gurwitz, who had already tripled, then smacked a two-run double giving the Sixers a 4-3 lead. The lead was short-lived as Jorge Tavarez (2-2) relieved Sixers starter Travis Herrin in the seventh. Herrin allowed three runs on seven hits with one walk and eight Ks in six frames. After two quick outs, San Jose got a single from Heliot Ramos and a double from Heath Quinn to tie the game at 4-4. The contest remained 4-4 until the bottom of the ninth when Giants righty Rodolfo Martinez (0-2) hit Ryan Scott in the arm with one out. Scott moved to third on Rivas' single. Martinez then lifted a fly to left and Giants' LF Courtney Hawkins sized it up and made a strong one-hop throw home. Scott, tagging from third, got to the plate as Pena's received the ball popping out of his glove to score the winning run. The 66ers improved to 41-70 on the year and 15-27 in the second half and evened their six-game home stand at 2-2.
