Storm fall 6-5, Stauffer records 17 straight outs

Lake Elsinore - The Storm dropped below .500 tonight after giving up a five run lead in the eighth falling 6-5 before the team heads on the road to play a three-game series against the Lancaster JetHawks.

Starting pitcher Tim Stauffer, in a rehab start pitched seven innings on the night. Stauffer started the game forcing back-to-back groundouts but gave up two singles in the inning. From then on Stauffer impressively forced 17 straight outs including five strikeouts and gave up no runs in the 78 pitch outing with the Storm.

In the fourth Cory Spangenberg and Rymer Liriano hit back-to-back singles to right field with one out. Also in a rehab assignment Carlos Quentin picked up an RBI with an infield groundout scoring Spangenberg. Liriano would score off a single hit by Connor Powers to give the Storm a 2-0 lead.

Spangenberg has hit in five straight games and in 11 of the last 12 games at the plate for the Storm.

In the fifth the Storm collected three runs by way of Spangenberg hitting a bases clearing double. Rocky Gale, Chris Bisson, and Rico Noel hit consecutive singles before Spangenberg hit the ball down the right field line to give the Storm a 5-0 lead.

In the series, Noel has had a three-hit game twice against High Desert with a team high batting average at .320.

In the eighth the Mavericks scored five runs to tie the game up highlighted by a pair of doubles hit by Steven Proscia and Mickey Wiswall.

High Desert took the lead in the ninth when Patrick Brady singled up the middle with one on scoring James Jones.
